Ottie Bowling Obituary

Ottie Campbell Bowling - "GAR"

Ottie Campbell Bowling, 95, of Amherst, was called to her heavenly home Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010, after a short illness. She was the widow of Aubrey Bowling.

Born Oct. 9, 1915, she was the third-oldest child of Ralph and Manie Lou Mays Campbell. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Franklin Bowling; grandson, Mark Bowling; four infant siblings, Walter, Withers, James and Maxine; three brothers, Robert, Maurice and Cecil; three sisters, Mary Tietjen, Nettie Mays and Janice Martin; three nieces, Frances, Sandra and Della; and three nephews, Fred, Danny Ray and Carroll W.

She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Eloise Bowling, of Amherst; a grandson, Keith, and his wife, Lynda, of Lynchburg; granddaughters, Sheryl Bowling, of Amherst, and Christie Falkner and her husband, Jimmy, of Grapevine, Texas; five great-grandchildren, Renee Polen and her husband, John, of Florence S.C., Amy Rice and Jenny Rice, of Goose Creek, S.C., Jeremy Almond and his wife, Tracy, of Lynchburg, and Ty Falkner, of Grapevine, Texas; two great-great-grandchildren, Trinity and Spencer Almond, of Lynchburg; four step-great-grandchildren, George, Bronson, Nicki and Landon; one foster brother, George Layne, of Lynchburg; 19 nieces and 16 nephews; three special sisters-in-law, Shirley Campbell (Cecil), Vernell Campbell (Robert), and Cynthia Bowling (Massie); one special brother-in-law, Howard Carpenter (Liz); friends, Marcella Johnson, of Appomattox, and Ruth Long, of Buena Vista; and a host of extended family and friends.

She was member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church and attended faithfully until health issues arose. Never meeting a stranger, she loved the Lord, church, family and friends, and found some good in everyone. She was a lover of nature and all living creatures, especially birds. Ottie resided at Odd Fellows Home in Lynchburg for the past two years, and the family would like to thank the staff for their compassionate care during her stay she considered them "all her children" and also three special caregivers, Becky, Mary and Susie.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church by the Revs. Judy Morris, Sal Sallinger and Carroll

Martin Jr., with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today, Dec. 29, 2010, at Whitten Monelison Chapel, and at other times at the residence.

Eloise, please know that you and your family are in my heart and prayers. I didn't know your mama, but she must have been a truly beautiful soul, if the daughter she raised is any indication. I hope that time and the love from your friends will help you through this sad time.

Ottie was one of the most special people I have ever known. I never heard her say an unkind word to or about anyone. She was one of the truly good people in this world and I am thankful to have known her all my life.

Eloise, just looking at the gallery of pictures saddens me because now all we have left are memories. My heart goes out to you and your entire family because when you lose your mother, you truly lose your best friend. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers, and don't ever forget that you were a great daughter. We were very fortunate to have our mothers to the ripe old age of 95--they were indeed the "real deal".
