Reuben Bryant Obituary

Reuben Ware "Doc" Bryant

Reuben Ware "Doc" Bryant, passed away on Wednesday, January 12, 2022. Born on July 15, 1934, in Amherst County, he was a son of the late E. Hawthorne and Ruth Lyon Bryant.

He is survived by his beloved wife and devoted caregiver, Nancy Winston Bryant, the love of his life for the past 39 years. He is also survived by five wonderful children, the legacy of which he was most proud. They are sons, Keith (Dana) of Atlanta, Elliot (Rosaly) of Forest, Jonathan (Andrea) of Amherst, and daughters, Deborah Cheek (Mike) of Evington, and Ruth Blanks (Dakota) of Lynchburg. The happiness they brought to his life included 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Other survivors include a sister, Elizabeth Hughes of Richmond; brother-in-law, John Burks of Texas; and a very devoted sister-in-law, Beverly Phelps of Appomattox.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth B. Burks and brothers, James, Clark, and Winfred Bryant.

"Doc" graduated from Lynchburg College in 1955 and the U. S. Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island in 1957. He served aboard the USS Essex for three years. His entire professional business career of 40 years was spent with The Babcock & Wilcox Company, principally in Lynchburg with The Naval Nuclear Fuel Division. He was especially proud of his association with B&W's role in support of The Naval Reactors Program. He was a strong advocate of this program, its mission, and its methods, and considered these years of involvement to be an extension of service to the country.

Doc's fondest memories derived from traipsing the woods, fields, and streams of Virginia with old friends, including bird dogs. He never met a bird dog he didn't like, although "Some, like people, were closer to their heavenly reward than others". He loved trout, quail, and grouse, and the hallowed environment that gave them life and gave him renewal. To all who were part of this scene, he looks forward to a reunion around some celestial campfire to reminisce with an old tin cup.

He was a member of New Concord Presbyterian Church, where he served on the Session and taught Sunday School.

A memorial service will be conducted at Robinson Funeral Home at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 22, 2022, officiated by Pastor Jim Stevens. A private burial will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Centra Hospice and their team, Kim, Olinca, and Patty.

Memorials may be made in his memory to Shriners Hospitals for Children,

Attn: Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607 or the National D-Day Memorial Foundation, P.O. Box 77, Bedford, VA 24523.

Nancy, Ruth, Deborah, Jonathan, Elliot and Keith: So sorry for Uncle Reuben's passing. He was so special to me growing up (he was the Bully of the Woods!) and as an adult, when I came to really appreciate his keen sense of humor and knowledge. Handsome, charming, charismatic and polite-the epitome of a Virginia Gentleman. He will be missed. Love all of you, Cousin Sally

I've been friends with Debbie since grade school and the strongest memory I have of her father was visiting at their house as a kid and seeing "Doc" with birds he'd hunted.

My sincere condolences go to Debbie, her family and siblings, and their families.

When I think of Uncle Reuben during the wonder years, I am awash with memories of the aroma of vanilla tobacco and his pipe collection, frequent spirited debates, bird dog worship, and watching Aunt Ginny dress the grouse from his morning hunt. The days were rich. From Isaac Walton to the homestead in Concord, I enjoyed many days with Uncle Reuben, Aunt Ginny, and cousins, Keith, Elliot, Debi, and Jonathan. With Uncle Reuben at the helm, there was always a challenge, a game, or quick wit. He made time for his family and encouraged their interests. What comes to me after all these years is those moments were woven into the fabric of my life and for that, I thank him & my aunt.
Rest in Peace and enjoy trout season on high!

Doc isn't physically with us now but his present will always be with me, his Family and his Friends. Doc was a well read individual, great listener, and could bring a perspective to a conversation that was very visionary, insightful and left one a serious desire to reflect on the Conversation.

Doc and I talked at least once a week until the last 10-12 days of his Life.

Doc certainly influenced my life in a very positive way and I will be forever Greatful for his shared WISDOM.

I extend my prayers to Nancy, Baby Ruth and all of the Family for God's Comfort during this very difficult period of our Lives.

Jug taught me to fly fish up on the north”prong” of the Tye River. He told lots of stories of fly fishing the Tye River with Reuben. He talked about back when the road wasn’t paved..they would catch a mess of native trout and fry them up creek side right at the edge of the dirt road because no one ever drove thru there back then. He said they could fish all day and never see another car. They made sure one of them would sink a couple of beers in the creek before fishing to wash down biscuits and some of that savory pink native trout. “There was nothing like a day fishing with Reuben. Man, he could fish!Reuben could make a trout”

I was so so saddened to hear of Uncle Reuben’s passing. Growing up I was privileged to witness a deep and profound love that Uncle Reuben and my daddy, his brother Jug, had for each other. My favorite memories are of the multitude of phone calls to “Squire” as they would call each other and visits with chats sitting atop the picnic table conferring together about bird dog training or latest uva basketball games. I was moved beyond tears to watch Uncle Reuben make the enormous effort to come to visit Daddy in his last days. I can only find peace that the Bryant boys are reunited and casting their beautiful smiles upon us all!
