Robert Wayne Patteson
January 28, 1943 - November 17, 2025
Robert Wayne Patteson, 82, of Amherst County, Va. died peacefully at his home on Monday, November 17, 2025. He was the husband of Gwen Staples Patteson.
Wayne was born on January 28, 1943, in Amherst Va., the son of the late Norman B. Patteson and Judith Whitehead Patteson.
Wayne graduated from Amherst County High School in 1961 and from Montreat Anderson College in 1963 with an Associate Degree in Business Administration. He attended Lynchburg College and graduated from Phillips Business College with an advanced Accounting Degree. He also graduated from Virginia Maryland Bankers School.
Wayne was employed by Nationwide Insurance Company in the Finance Department before joining the Army, which he served from 1966-1969. He was stationed in Germany for two years and received the Army Accommodation Metal and the rank of SP5. After the Army, Wayne worked at B & W, Old Forest Road, the Town of Amherst as Executive Secretary, Farmers and Merchant Bank, where he worked for eight years and held the position of Vice President and Treasurer of the bank. Upon leaving F & M Bank, Wayne became a State Farm Insurance Agent for 24 years. After his retirement from State Farm, Wayne went full time into the Beef Cattle Business which was what he loved to do and had been doing part time for most of his life.
Wayne was Past President of the Virginia Charolais Association, on the Board of Directors for Virginia Cattlemen's Association, Past President of the Nelson Amherst Beef Producers Association, Past Treasurer and on the Board of Deacons of Amherst Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his sister, Norma Patteson Mills, (Olan) of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two daughters, Denny Patteson, and Anna Ware (Timmy) both of Amherst, Va.; two step-sons, Raphael Porres, M.D. of Sweden, and Sean Porres of Los Angeles, Calif.; grandchildren, Zachery Toone of Raleigh, NC, Megan Toone, and Justin Ware (Madi) of Amherst, and Katelyn Ware of Austin, Texas; great grandchildren, Saylor Hodnett, and Mills Ware of Amherst. Also surviving are his sister-in-law, Becky Talley of Amherst; three nephews, Jay Mills (Jennifer), Brent Mills (Julie), and Kincaid Mills (Allison) all of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two great nieces, Hannah Mills of NYC, and Augusta Mills of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and one great nephew, Caid Mills of Chattanooga, Tenn.
There will be a family and friends' visitation at Driskill's Funeral Home, Amherst, VA from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, November 20, 2025, and a graveside service Friday, November 21, 2025, at 2 p.m. at the Amherst Cemetery, Grandview Drive, Amherst, Va.
