Thomas Houston Fitzgerald

Thomas Houston Fitzgerald, 88, returned to live with his Heavenly Father and join his wife, Phyllis Lorine McCormick Fitzgerald on May 15, 2021.
He was born on April 8, 1933, to Houston Flood Fitzgerald and Mirl McGann Fitzgerald in Nelson County, Virginia. He is survived by his only sibling, Madge Grant Bradley. He graduated from Fleetwood High School in Nelson County, Virginia.
Thomas served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. He was a military policeman and a top-secret courier.
He took classes at the University of Maryland while stationed in Germany. He graduated from Phillips Business College in Lynchburg with a degree in accounting. He worked as an accountant for Craddock-Terry, Old Dominion Box Company, Babcock and Wilcox, and Kowalsky Machine.
He was a member of the Lyn-Dan Heights Ruritan Club and the Woodman of the World. Thomas was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He and Phyllis were baptized as one of the first members in Lynchburg in October 1967. Thomas and Phyllis were legally married on December 4th, 1959 and again on September 19, 1983, for all time and eternity in the Washington, D.C. Temple.
He loved being outdoors doing yard work and planting a massive garden every summer. If he had to stay indoors, he enjoyed reading, listening to classical music, and watching cartoons.
Thomas leaves behind his two daughters, Lisa F. Rakes and her husband, Gary, of Wausau, Wisc., and Lori F. Davis and her husband, Greg, of Brookneal, Va. He was the grandfather of seven, Alison R. Hostetler and her husband, Jeffrey, of Pensacola, Fal., Amanda R. Smith and her husband, Steven, of Melbourne, Fla., Garret Thomas Rakes and his wife, Devika, of Corpus Christi, Texas, Darin L. Fitzgerald of Rustburg, Va., Leah E. Rakes of Wausau, Wisc., Morgan Davis Worley and her husband, Jeremiah, of Moseley, Va., and Nicholas Davis of Concord, Va. He was also the great-grandfather of six, Riley, Taylor and Addison Hostetler, Declan, Daphne and Beckett Smith; and other close and dear family members.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2021, at the Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Road, Lynchburg, Va.
