Thomas Nowell Obituary
Tom Nowell, a beloved husband, brother, uncle, friend and mentor to countless students, took a bow and made his final exit on June 9, 2025.
Born on October 4, 1943, in Ashville, NC, Tom lived in several states and several countries, before his family made their home in Dothan, AL. Tom proudly served his country in College ROTC and as a Captain in the U.S. Army serving a tour of duty in Vietnam.
Tom was a theater professor at Montevallo College in Alabama and Lynchburg College with a career that spanned over 40 years.
Tom is survived by his wife of 26 years, Pamela; his daughter, Jessica Criscione (Kenzi) of Chester, NY; his brother, Dr. Richard Nowell (Susan) of St. Augustine, FL and his brother, Dr. Michael Nowell (Beth) of Dothan, AL. Tom leaves behind a host of relatives, best friend, Mike DeGiorgio, an enormous theater family and his very spoiled "fur babies."
A celebration of Tom's life will be held for family and friends on Saturday, July 26, 2025, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Commerce Street Theater.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Tom's honor and memory to Commerce Street Theater, 1022 Commerce Street., Lynchburg, VA 24504.

I was hoping to attend the celebration today but I am still recovering from a broken hip. Tom was my teacher back in the 70s and I have many fond memories of that time. I even stayed with Jessica when he and her mother went out of town. My deepest sympathy to Pamela and his whole family.

Donnalynn and I have been seeing shows at Commerce Street for many years and appreciated the work Tom did and his contribution to theatre arts in the Lynchburg area. His theatre was the inspiration for the design of our own theatre in Brookneal, and we have shared several set pieces over the past few years. He will be missed and long remembered.
