Aug 25, 1950 - Jun 29, 2024
Willie Dexter Bowling Jr., known affectionately as "Dexter," passed away peacefully on June 29, 2024, at the age of 73, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 25, 1950, in Amherst County, VA, and cherished his early years in Piney River.
Dexter was a man of deep commitment and devotion. He shared 52 remarkable years of marriage with his beloved wife, Virginia, creating a home filled with warmth, laughter, and enduring memories. Together, they built a family legacy grounded in strong values and unwavering support for each other.
Dexter was a devoted father who took great pride in his children: Wayne Bowling (Caren), Sarah Hudson (Shep), and Amanda Bowling. He treasured his grandchildren: Melanie Bowling, Cody Bowling, Stella Hudson, and Savannah Hudson, as they brought him immense joy and happiness.
In addition to his immediate family, Dexter leaves behind his cherished dog, Bear, who was a faithful companion. He is also survived by his sister, Louise Mays; and his dear friend, John Blum, with whom he shared many memorable experiences. Dexter will be deeply missed by his extended family, friends, and all who knew him.
Dexter was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Mabel Bowling; and his brother Thomas Clayton "T.C." Bowling.
Dexter's dedication to service was evident throughout his life. After graduating from Amherst County High School, he served in the Army National Guard and was a proud member of the American Legion for 41 years.
Dexter's career was distinguished by a strong work ethic, unwavering integrity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Until recently, he dedicated himself to working full time in the lab to ensure quality at Hanwha Azdel. Before that, Dexter contributed to night vision technology at ITT Industries in Roanoke and specialized in aircraft maintenance at Specialty Avionics in Charlottesville. The majority of his professional journey was spent in diverse roles during his extensive tenure at GE/Ericsson in Lynchburg.
Despite his quiet demeanor, Dexter had a sharp wit and loved sharing jokes and stories with those close to him. He found solace and joy in tending to his garden, especially experimenting with different varieties of tomatoes and other vegetables. Dexter also had a passion for fishing and often wished he could spend more time pursuing this hobby. However, his greatest happiness was found at his country home or at the beach with his beloved wife, Virginia. It was there that he felt most at peace and content.
A celebration of Dexter's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 8th , at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, with Rev. Nancy Johnson officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Amherst Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, July 7th , from 4 to 6 p.m. at Driskill Funeral Chapel in Amherst, VA.
