Anthony Gurgui
1927 - 2021
Gurgui - Anthony on March 30, 2021. Born on June 13, 1927 he was the last surviving of the 9 children of Joseph and Teresa Gurgui, who had immigrated from Barcelona, Spain in the early 20th century. He is fondly remembered by his many nephews and nieces (Gurgui and Herrick families). He grew up in Brooklyn. Anthony served in the Army for two years as well in the Merchant Marines, where he served for over 30 years, rising from Seaman to the rank of Navigation Officer, making 79 ports of call while traveling the world. When not at sea, he worked as a bricklayer in alternating 6-month stints. Anthony was fluent in Catalan but spoke several languages and loved telling stories of his many travels and adventures. He had a wonderful memory of people, places, and dates. In his off time, he enjoyed a wide variety of sports, especially excelling at skiing in which he won multiple medals. He was always up for organizing a game of softball at large family gatherings. He eventually settled in Brentwood, where he lived with his Sister along with 2 other siblings on the same street. He was a member of St. Anne's Church in Brentwood, where he served faithfully as an usher. Reposing Monday, April 5, 2021: 10:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. at Michael J.
