Charles Gabrus Obituary

Gabrus - Charles S. "Chuck", died on January 17, 2025, at his home in North Port, FL. He was born in Hempstead, NY, in 1923, to Joseph and Teofilia Gabrus. Charles was the middle brother of Joseph and Alfred, both deceased. He was married to Olga Gabrus

(nee Krapf), deceased; and had two children, Gayle Metzger-Hauser of North Port, FL, and Charles Gabrus Jr., deceased. Charles had two grandchildren, Courtney

Gabrus of Hilton Head, SC, and Jake Gabrus, California. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and flew 31 missions over Germany with the 489th BG, 845th BS of the Mighty 8th Airforce. Upon return to the states, he fought forest fires in California. Charles was employed by Bell Telephone (Verizon) for over 25 years. He, Olga, and their two children lived in East Meadow for 53 years. He then moved to Montgomery, NY, and eventually to North Port, FL, to live with his daughter and her husband, Steven Hauser. He loved fast cars, golf, Nascar, and the Jets, and especially his dog, Cherry. Services will be graveside at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, NY. In his memory, donations can be made to the Collings Foundation, 568 Main St., Hudson, MA 01749, for restoration of the B-24 Liberator, or to your local animal shelter. Funeral Arrangements entrusted to Charles J. O'Shea Funeral Homes. Interment will take place on Tuesday at Calverton National Cemetery, at 1:30 pm, in Calverton, NY. www.osheafuneral.com

Our sincerest condolences on the passing of Charles. We recognize and honor his service as a Waist Gunner on a B-24 Liberator flying with the 489th Bomb Group, 845th Bomb Squadron based in Halesworth, Suffolk during WWII. We are honored to keep his memory alive through the restoration and display of our B-24 Liberator over the coming years to honor the memories of all veterans of the Greatest Generation who fought so valiantly over the skies of Europe during World War II. We will never forget you.
