Christine Barbuto
A Practical Joker

Christine J. Barbuto was one of those people whom everyone else wanted to be around. Her friends from the University of Rhode Island recalled how they hung out in 106 Barlow Hall, where she lived with Jennifer Tice in her freshman year. Erik J. Granskog, a college friend, spoke of the good times they had "playing charades, wearing stupid hats, watching `Cheers,' dancing and singing to the Violent Femmes over and over, inventing silly drinking games."

Dianne Walsh, one of Ms. Barbuto's two older sisters, recalled an old family tale: when someone praised Ms. Walsh's singing at a concert, Ms. Barbuto asked, "How long have you had this problem with your hearing?"

"She was probably 9 at the time," Ms. Walsh said.

Ms. Barbuto was also a practical joker. Her former roommate, now Jennifer Tice- McClain, said the two of them would hide behind the curtains when they saw male students heading for class and make catcalls until they turned red and ran.

"The sad thing is that Christine and I were not done being roommates," Ms. Tice- McClain said. "We always joked about how we were going to live together at the same old lady home and put Ex-Lax into the brownies and Saran-Wrap the toilets."

Ms. Barbuto, 32, of Brookline, Mass., was a buyer for the TJX Companies and was on American Airlines Flight 11 on Sept. 11.

In Utah, I found the flag and attached with it. Is your name and the flight you were on AA 11 and a brief synopsis of you. I may have met you once or twice, but I did not know you but many from ADPI Sorority and TKE Fraternity at URI did. You are and will always be held in high regard. You and your family should know that. If have not seen this before and would like it sent to you I would be happy to do so. God Bless, Phil Sullivan

My thoughts and prayers were with Christine's family yesterday, and every day. My husband and I did get to visit the 9/11 Memorial in NY last year and we found Christine's photo and other info on the computer there...so very touching. So even though I did not personally know her, I will never forget her, since I found that hat from Rockport, MA on the Cape Cod beach...I wear it often. Yesterday in our town I visited a local business owner who has a large 9/11 display on his front lawn of his business - I told him about Christine and he was so interested and sends his heartfelt thoughts...

To the family of Christine Barbuto. I wanted to contact you to tell you I purchased a flag representing Christine during a 9/11 memorial exhibition; each flag represented a deceased person from the 911 tragedy; each flag had a yellow ribbon with name, age, city, and where the deceased was when they died. I fly her flag many times per year; especially on 9/11. She is flying today. God Bless!

I was thinking today as I often do of the many victims of 911. They remain a symbol to me of how different life has been since that day in all of our history. I was so saddened when I learned that Christine was taken on that day. Today I discovered this website for the first time. What an incredible tribute. The pictures are powerful and beautiful and leave one with a lasting love for who Christine will always be. I knew Christine from growing up in Peabody and being friends with Diane. She was the little sister, full of energy and spunk. I did not know her in her adulthood but thankfully, because of this site, I am able to see her shining through. Thinking of you all on this day, as I often do. Wishing you support, beautiful memories, and always a new way to keep Christine close to you. Know that so many continue to remember and think of you.

GO, it was a wonderful feeling to be able to pay tribute to Christine. I will always be grateful that Christine was placed in my life, she lives in my heart and keeps me smiling. The loss I feel is great but just knowing her makes up for that, she was taken from us too soon but she has left us with so much more. I can still remember the poem she wrote,,,
"All my friends tell me, Relax.. Take it easy... where's the fire?
The fire I tell them is right here and it's burning brighter than ever. I've always been a dreamer and now I'm making those dreams come true, World, catch me if you can. - CJB

On this eve of that horrific day I find myself again missing your smile, your laugh and your sarcasm. I cant believe I havent seen you in over 12 years, the loss is still fresh. I cant imagine what my life would have been like without you in it. The short time we had was like gold and I am grateful for every moment spent with you, I can still crack up laughing thinking about all the great times and just every day stuff that we did. Ill always put our friendship on a pedastal, it was the best one I have ever had. Im so lucky to have known you, thank you for being my buddy! I try everyday to laugh at least once or twice ( more like try and be serious once or twice) and do my best, you gave me a great example of all that a friend could be and more. We were like Ernie and Bert... except neither of us had a unibrow. Ugh, I love ya Barbutes..... My thoughts are with your sisters and all your nieces and nephews. I hear Kyle is going to URI, do you think he will let me come visit? I will tell him to sit on your bench. Im off to work now and I have some friends that will be praying for you tonight and tomorrow am at Ground Zero. I was supposed to go but they need me at work. Love you forever!!!!
