ATWOOD - Elizabeth Morse "Liz", of Islip, NY, passed away on July 23rd, 2022, after a brief illness, at the age of 90. She was born on June 5th 1932 in Brooklyn NY, daughter of George Perley Morse and Ruth Stelling Morse. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years Frederic Lawrence Atwood and her sister Margery Muller. She is survived by her 4 children Frederic L. Atwood Jr, (Gail Graeub Atwood), Julia Atwood Berman (David Beaudette), George Kimball Atwood (Nicki Dakis) and James Morse Atwood
(Kerry Green Atwood) and 10 grandchildren: Woody, Will, Maggie, Emily, Nat, Caroline, Roddy, Ted, Seth and Grace. She is predeceased by her eleventh grandchild, Nicholas Atwood. She attended Mount Holyoke College and graduated in 1954, with a degree in Physiology. She attended Katherine Gibbs school in Cambridge, MA and met her husband Fred who attended nearby Harvard Law. They were married August 27, 1955 at her family home in Brookhaven, NY. After living in Manhattan for several years, they moved to Islip to raise their family. Liz was a competitive sailboat racer as a teenager and successfully skippered her boat in the Narrasketuck fleet with an all-girls' crew out of Bellport Yacht Club, where she also taught sailing lessons. For many years she served as secretary of the Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association, and member of the Race Committee. She was a very active member of the Southside Garden Club, and became certified as a Garden Club of America Horticulture Judge. She was known for her beautiful but simple floral arrangements and her green thumb. Liz was a dedicated member and servant of Saint Mark's Episcopal Church. She was director of the Altar Guild for 35+ years and her floral decorations for Christmas and Easter holidays were always perfectly understated and beautiful. She volunteered at the church thrift shop regularly, and often found treasures for herself that were too good to pass up! Liz recently served on the board of directors of the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook. She was a supporter and volunteer at Seatuck Environmental Association, which was co-founded by her late husband. She also served on the board of Hewlett School in East Islip (now dissolved). Liz was an avid tennis player until well into her eighties and was always a fan of professional tennis. She was a very good pianist, and she dearly loved her many Labrador Retrievers over the years. Although she never wanted to be the center of attention, she always loved to throw a party, including her recent 90th birthday celebration. She adored family gatherings especially involving her 10 grandchildren, and most recently traveled to Jamaica last Christmas with them for a family vacation. She was always game for any adventure. We will remember Liz for her pragmatic, kind, but fun-loving and cheerful personality, and her quiet, selfless devotion to her church and community. She had an impeccable sense of style and an uncanny ability to make something truly beautiful even from a vase full of weeds. Arrangements have been entrusted to Overton Funeral Home, Islip, NY. A memorial service will be held at Saint Mark's Episcopal Church on Saturday August 6th at 10 o'clock AM. In lieu of flowers, kindly direct donations in Liz's memory to Saint Mark's Episcopal Church Altar Guild.
