Helen Meyers Obituary

MEYERS-Mother Helen Myrtle. January 23, 1912-October 31, 2006. Longtime Freeport resident and family matriarch Mother Helen Meyers; a champion of love, respect, and caring, passed away peacefully in her home on October 31, 2006. Her early years were spent in Goose Creek, South Carolina, where she married the late Alexander Willamon (Fella) Meyers on March 20, 1932. From this union eight sons and four daughters were born. Two sons preceded her in death. Blessed with many talents, Helen Meyers was always a hard, humble and innovative worker. Along with her family, she migrated to Freeport, N.Y. where she was immediately drawn to the Second Baptist Church and has been a faithful, active member since 1953, serving as Church Mother at the time of her death. This saintly woman of God believed His word and unselfishly worked to help God's people. She is a founding member of the Sunrise Park Housing Development Fund and honored by County Executives both past and present, The Village of Freeport, as well as other elected officials for her commitment to serving the down trodden. Mother Helen Myrtle Meyers leaves to cherish fond memories: six sons, Joe L. (Betty) of Monroe, NC, Cleveland (Calle) of Murrels Inlet, SC, Howard (Maudestine) of Myrtle Beach, SC, Donald (Deborah) of Laguna Nigel, CA, Frederick J. and LeRoy of Freeport, NY; surrogate son Michael McPhatter (Barbara) of Garland, TX; four daughters, Kathy Martin (Barney), Rosalie Walker-Garrett (Kent), Bessie Meyers-Jones (Raymond), and Wardell Meyers-Pitt, all of Long Island, NY; daughter in law Elizabeth Meyers of Birmingham, AL, brother in law James E. Posey of Freeport; 46 grandchildren (and spouses), 61 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, surrogate children and the Greater Second Baptist Church family. All services will be held at the Greater Second Baptist Church, 129 E. Merrick Road, Freeport, NY. Viewing and Wake Services will be held on Friday, November 3rd from 25PM and 7-9PM. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 4th beginning at 9:30AM.

Mom! Thank you. I often reflect on many of your little sayings. Those words of wisdom sustain me daily. When I'm troubled, challenged, or need sound advice, I recall many of the scripures you shared with me--for assurance, Ps-23, for encouragement, Ps 91, when challenged, ps 37. Thanks for teaching me the way of the Cross. I love you. I was in the Holy land on the 2nd anniversay of your transition. What a blessing to be able to see and walk where Jesus walked.

In the realm of the Spirit I am having a flashback, and I hear you singing "If you live right . . heaven belongs to you . . . . if you pray right . . . heaven belongs to you . . . treat your neighbor right . . . heaven belongs to you . . . oh . . heaven belongs to you.

Who knew two Sundays ago would be the very last time I would have a chance to speak, touch, and kiss, you - I am so glad that God allowed me that chance to go back and take the time to say "hello." There is no doubt that you have lived right and heaven belongs to you. You are among the last the strong women in my life who always exemplified kindness and holiness.

You have left your family a legacy - that gives them no excuse for failure - I will do my part in helping with Ashlee - it still amazes me that we have really become family.

Tell Nana hello - and I will see you both again in the morning and we will all crown him King of Kings and Lord of Lord together.

I am so sorry I can't be there for the Homegoing Services.

Family - you have my deepest condolences - remember these words from 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 "(13) But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. (14) For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. (15) For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. (16) For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. (17) Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. (18) Therefore comfort one another with these words."

Cousin Myrtle,
One thing we share is Birthdays yours on the 23rd, mines on the 24th and Tracee's on the 25th. Thank you for the first years of Anthony-Terrell's life as you baby sat for him. You had cures that only you know. Thank you for the loving famous "Punch" on the arm that was welcomed by all who knew you, especially me. You will be missed for your wisdom and kindness and most of all your honesty. We love you .. My prayer is that even though the last of the matriachs is gone that this family grows in Love and Respect for each other as you have always told me. Rest your work is done.
