Homer Tomlinson Obituary

Born July 1, 1926 in Queens Village. The son of Marie and Rev. Homer A. Tomlinson. In 1944 he was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps serving in the South Pacific and China during World War ll. He was an accomplished trumpet player and was in the 3rd Marine division band. Upon return to the USA he continued his studies at the Julliard School of Music and played in many different bands. In 1947 he started working for the Long Island Railroad as a clerk and agent. In 1949 he was married to Freda Wollwerth. She is an accomplished pianist which made them a great team. The couple were active in Syosset Gospel Church where Homer was Sunday School Supt. and in Calvary Baptist Church in Port Jefferson Station where he also was Sunday school Supt. and was song leader and choir member for many years. Homer continued broadening his career with the LIRR by developing a group sales and tourism department whose purpose was to increase ridership during midday service and weekends. Homer headed this department for over 30 years as Manager Customer Sales and was on the Presidents staff. Many of his promotional programs are still being used today. He also was a member of the International SKAL CLUB of New York for over 34 years serving as President in 1985. He retired from the LIRR in 1986. After retirement he continued in the tourism business by joining TAUCK TOURS as a tour Tour Director and a Long Island Sales Rep. He leaves his wife Freda Tomlinson of Huntington Station, sons Rev. Clifford Tomlinson of Dix Hills and Rev. Steven Tomlinson of Manhasset. He also leaves seven grandchildren, Christine Potter, Adam Tomlinson, Rebekah Tomlinson, Melody Tomlinson, Faith Tomlinson, AaronTomlinson, Tabitha Tomlinson, two daughter-in-laws Vickie Tomlinson and Michel Tomlinson, John Potter husband of Christine and great granddaughter Audrey and great grandson Daniel Potter. Viewing will be at Jacobsen's in Huntington Sta. Tuesday November 18th from 2-4PM and service at Shelter Rock Church in Syosset at 7PM the same day.

This was the son of a great man of God and overseer of The Church of God Homer Sr. Homer Jr in his passing marks the life and influence of the Tomlinson's in spreading the oracles of pentacost.

Homer was a wonderful example of a fine christian man. Our encounters with him on the LIRR made our class excursions better because of his personal touch. May God's presence be with each of you during this time of loss.
