It's been two years and I still miss Howard so much. A lot of people still miss him.

I know he died a hero, and I am very proud of my little brother. I also know that he was too good of a soul to stay on this earth. Perhaps God needed him in Heaven, I understand that too, but he is so very badly missed.

I love you Howard!

I DONT KNOW YOUR FAMILY PERSONALLY BUT I HAVE GRANDCHILDREN IN SOUTHWEST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND THEY KNEW YOU AND I AM ALSO A MEMBER OF HOLY FAMILY CATHOLIC CHURCH AND WAS AN USHER AT HOWARDS FUNERAL MASS AND MY HUSBAND AND MYSELF ALSO GREW UP ON LONG ISLAND. I ALSO HAVE A NEPHEW WHO JUST BECAME A WS POLICE OFFICER LAST AUGUST. I ALSO LOST MY HUSBAND AT A YOUNG AGE(52, AND WE WERE MARRIED, 33 YEARS) VERY SUDDENLY SO I FEEL A CONNECTION TO YOU & CERTAINLY UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE GOING THROUGH. I KNOW A VERY HARD DAY FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY IS COMING WITH THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF HOWARDS PASSING. I KNOW HOW HARD IT WILL BE AND THE HORRENDOUS MEMORIES IT BRINGS BACK BUT BE ASSURED ITS JUST ONE DAY AND YOU WILL GET THROUGH IT. SOMEONE ONCE SAID TO ME "IF GOD TAKES YOU TO IT, HE WILL GET YOU THROUGH IT". JUST KEEP ALL THE WONDERFUL MEMORIES OF ALL THE DAYS BEFORE THAT AWFUL TRAGEDY CLOSE TO YOUR HEART. I SEE HOWARDS NAME IN THE BULLETIN FROM HOLY FAMILY FOR THE MASSES BEING SAID FOR HIM AND I ALWAYS SAY AN EXTRA SPECIAL PRAYER FOR YOU AND YOUR GIRLS AND THE REST OF THE FAMILY. I KNOW GOD AND YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS WILL BE YOUR STRENGTH IN GETTING ON FROM DAY TO DAY AND ONE DAY AGAIN THE SUN WILL SHINE. LIFE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME BUT YOU WILL ENJOY LIFE AGAIN AT SOME POINT AND HOWARD WILL FOREVER BE IN YOUR HEART. JUST REMEMBER "WE COULD HAVE MISSED THE PAIN BUT THEN WE WOULD HAVE HAD TO MISS THE DANCE". MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR GIRLS AND LIFE BE GOOD TO YOU. YOU CERTAINLY DESERVE IT.

Dear Joyce-

I think of you often and wonder how you are doing. I know that Howard's anniversary is approaching and how insurmountable your grief must be. I treasure the times we spent at Salem and look back on them with much fondness. I haven't spoken with you since we left the area but would love to get in touch. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope that you can find some peace and comfort through those that love you.

I am deeply saddened at the loss of a father, husband and fellow Law Enforcement Officer. As a former W-S Police Officer, I am convinced that the city and people of W-S will be there for the family. What a great loss to the city of Winston-Salem. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

A WSPD WIFE

April 22, 2007

A Police Officers Wife

A special kind of woman: a cut above the rest.
That's a police officers wife, rating her among the best.

How many good-byes are whispered, joined with a fond embrace,
As duty steals her man for the dangers he must face.

How often have meals been ruined -- or tender moments disturbed
By a call for special duty, sparking loyalty unswerved.

It's a devil of a job, for an angel like this
Who-- for the love of her man must forsake that kiss.

She can run a garden tractor, even paint a room in need
How she can stretch a dollar, a miracle indeed.

She's a mother, lover, chauffeur, and nurse
A living symbol of; "For better or worse."

Rich is the man reaping his rewards in life
Who chose to be the other half of a police officers wife

Although we have been neighbors for quite a few years, we have never really come to know your family. But, it was always evident that you were, and are a very close and loving family. In addition to being a excellent neighors, it would always give us comfort to know that a police officer was always near by. Our heartfelt condolences go to each of you in the Plouff family. We know you have many close friends, family and others. But if ever there comes a need that we might help with, please don't hesitate to come ask.

He was my baby brother and I am so proud of him. He grew into a fine, honest, honorable, family man. At his funeral service one of the Detectives shared this wonderful story with me. Apparently when the Winston-Salem Police Department makes an arrest they request that the prisoner fill out a feedback form. For the past 14 years an instuctor at the academy read one of these forms as part of her class, and it went something like this....
"...I have been arrested many times, but Officer Plouff treated me with dignity and respect..."

There will not be a single day that goes by that I will not miss him. It's amazing what a difference one life can make.

Many thanks to the wonderful people of the WSPD, who gave of themselves unselfishly during my family's time of sorrow.

There are no words delicate enough to comfort those who have lost a loving friend and family member to violence. None that can express the sadness felt or the anger and contempt without screaming out for justice. God give us the strength to carry on, to work for the goodness in man by taking a stand against the evil. To be kind when kindness shows it's face and fierce against those that prove wicked. And know that all of us, together and alone, stand with you, for your family and for your brothers holding the thin blue line intact. And we say a prayer, each night, for you and those other heros we are no longer able to see, asking Him who comforts us, to give us peace.

Dear Plouff Family -
I did not know Sgt. Plouff. But my heart breaks for you. My father was a police officer for 15 years. My father is so angry. As we viewed the memorial in the parking lot today, I cried as I told my parents how sad I was for the girls. As I told them, though I was lucky that this never happened to my father, there were so many close calls. I do not know how the girls feel but I have come close too many times. God Bless you all and you are in my thoughts and prayers forever

God will be your sustainer and HE will carry all of you through. May it help to know others care and my prayers will continue with you.

Dear Joyce and family; Growing up with you and Howard were some of my best memories from Bohemia. It's unimaginable how this could have happened to such an honorable man and how you have been dealing with this tragic loss. I still remember when you and Howard started dating and you were inseperable form the start. I vividly remember driving around in Howard's blue cougar, listening to La Grange by ZZ Top, Connetquot HS memories and so much more. Those really were the best days of our lives. It hurts to think of the loss of such a great guy. You two were some of my best and most loyal friends and I know we will always continue to remain so no matter how far apart we live or no matter what the future holds for us. I can only pray that you, Joyce, and your family find some peace at some point. God Bless Howard Plouff!

To Joyce, Brandy and Holly Plouff; There's nothing we can say that would take away your pain and loss. Your husband and father was a good man, and he will not be forgotten. It's my sincere hope that you'll find comfort in his memory.

I have never suffered a loss as great as yours, but I also lost a family member to violence when I was 13. A teacher told me to read 'Dirge Without Music,' by Edna St. Vincent Millay. For whatever reason, it helped.

Every once in awhile, a person comes along that touches the life of everyone around him or her. Sgt Plouff was one of those men. The things spoken here and other forums are not just nice words spoken about someone who has passed away. SgtPLouff was truly a special person who will be missed by so many people. My prayers are with Sgt Plouffs wife and children. May God guide you through this tragic moment in your lives. Thank You Sgt Plouff for charging into battle while I slept last Thursday night. To the Plouff family,
I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. As members serving within law enforcement we all do our jobs to make sure that our friends, families, and neighbors are safe, but at the same time we all understand the risks involved. In law enforcement we are all like our own extended family even if we don't know each other personally and when something as devastating as this happens it reaches every extention of the family...even farther than you know. Events like this make us all realize just how precious life is. May God hold you close and protect you always.

February 28, 2007

We pray for you many times each day. Words cannot convey our sympathy. Although, we never had the privilege of meeting Sgt Plouff, we know that he like all law enforcement officers deserve our greatest admiration for the work they do. Their families are also to be admired for so generously supporting them in the career they have chosen. God bless, keep and comfort you now and always. We will not forget to pray for you as the years pass. We still pray for the families of other officers that were killed in the line of duty.

To the Plouff family,
Although words cannot console the hurt that you feel, the knowledge that thousands are praying for your family may help a small bit. I only wish that I had been fortunate to know your husband and father as I have heard so many wonderful things about him. In the loss of a loved one you often have many questions and fears of what will happen but I feel safe in saying that he is sitting beside God as I type this and is watching to make sure that you and your family are okay. I thank your husband for putting his life on the line for so many of us in this area and I thank you for sharing him with so many people in need. May God bless you and keep you strong in this tough time...many thoughts and prayers are with you so lean on those and on each other.

Plouff will now finish his job as Gods Servant in paradise. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful person with the community he lived in. He is a hero and will be missed greatly. To the Plouff Family,
Yesturday, as I sat in the church that was overflowing with family, friends and fellow officers, it was a comfort to me knowing that Howard was loved so much. There are not enough words for me to express how touched I was by the beautiful voice of Brandi as she sang the song for her father. Holli and her young mind finding the right words to put into a song for her father. Joyce, for the outpouring of your heart in the letter to Howard and your willingness to share it with us. Howard would be proud to know that you all stood before a crowd of hundreds at the darkest time of your life and yet your love for him shown brightly and always will. I have never been to such a spiritually moving service before. I was deeply touched. I knew Howard when I was with the WSPD and worked the 400 sector with him, although on different squads. He was always so much fun and loved picking on everyone. I will continue to keep your family in my heart and prayers.

Joyce, Holly and Brandy, I no longer work for the WSPD but I did have the pleasure of teaching Howard a class in "Rookie" school. I just saw him a few weeks ago and had a chance to chat a short time. He was a wonderful person, a great police officer and I have no doubt he was an excellent supervisor. I am very saddened by his tragic death and please know that my prayers and thoughts are with you and your entire family. May God bless you all.

My life is but at weaving between my God and me
I cannot choose the colors, He worketh steadily
Oft times He weaveth sorrows and I in foolish pride
Forget He sees the upper, and I the underside
Not til the loom is silent, and the shuttles cease to fly
Shall God unroll the canvas and explain the reasons why
The dark threads are as needful in the Weaver's skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver in the pattern he has planned.

My family and I are saddened by the death of a good man who dedicated his career to serving others and dedicated his life to loving his family.

There are a number of us who have lost a loved one to violent crime. Strengthened by faith, family and friends, many of us remain strong and keep those who have passed on alive in our hearts and minds every day.

Dear Plouff Family
I am very sad to hear about Howard.
I remember meeting him a few times at Marie's in Bohemia, he was a great guy. I know what a loving and close knit family you all are and how devastating this is. Shortly after Liz and I parted ways my brother Richard, who was a year older than I ,passed away, losing a sibling is bad, I can't imagine losing a child. God bless you all,Marie, Liz, Paul, Christine, Jackie and everyone else, my heart and prayers are with you. I will always carry good memories of Howard and all of you.
Sincerely
Tim Kelly

MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY GOES OUT TO ALL OF THE PLOUFF FAMILY MEMBERS. I DO NOT KNOW ANY OF YOU PERSONALLY BUT FEEL CONNECTIONS THROUGH GROWING UP ON LONG ISLAND NOT FAR FROM YOU, FROM MY DAD BEING A RETIRED NYC FIREMAN AND KNOWING THE DANGERS THE COPS AND FIREMAN ENDURE, ALSO HAVING A NEPHEW WHO HAS JUST JOINED THE WSPD FORCE AND IS IN TRAINING SCHOOL AND WAS AT THE FUNERAL YESTERDAY AND ALSO HAVING GRANDCHILDREN AT SOUTHWEST SCHOOL WHO KNOW YOUR DAUGHTER. MY BIGGEST CONNECTION TO YOU JOYCE IS THAT I LOST MY HUSBAND 10 YEARS AGO VERY SUDDENLY AT AGE 52 AFTER BEING MARRIED 33 YEARS AND ALSO BEING CHILDHOOD SWEETHEARTS. I KNOW ITS GOING TO BE A VERY LONG TOUGH ROAD FOR YOU AND THE GIRLS BUT WITH GODS HELP AND SUPPORT OF ALL OF YOUR WONDERFUL FAMILY, FRIENDS, YOUR SCHOOL FAMILY AND THE POLICE FAMILY YOU WILL BE OK. I NOW CAN SAY THIS AS I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD BE OK. I WAS AT THE FUNERAL YESTERDAY AS AN USHER FOR HOLY FAMILY AND THE LOVED JUST POURED OUT FOR YOU AND YOUR GIRLS. I REMEMBER TEN YEARS AGO PEOPLE TELLING ME I WAS GOING TO BE OKAY AND IT MEANT NOTHING BUT I PROMISE THAT ONE DAY YOU WILL BE ABLE TO REMEMBER YOUR MEMORIES AND LOOK AT PICTURES WITH LAUGHTER INSTEAD OF TEARS. I ALSO HAVE TO TELL YOU THAT SOMEONE TOLD ME 10 YEARS AGO THAT "TIME" IS YOUR "BEST FRIEND". NO TRUER WORDS COULD HAVE BEEN SAID. ALSO AS YOU SAID SO BEAUTIFULLY AT THE FUNERAL "WE HAD TO TAKE THE CHANCE;WE HAVE TO ACCEPT THE PAIN;OR WE WOULD NEVER HAVE HAD THE DANCE".GOD BLESS YOU AND THE GIRLS AND THE REST OF THE FAMILY. I DO BELIEVE HOWARD WILL ALWAYS BE WITH YOU IN SPIRIT "UNTIL YOU MEET AGAIN".
