Here's a poem someone passed on to me...seemed appropriate:

God saw you getting tired

And a cure was not to be

So He put his arms around you

And whispered, "Come to me."

With tearful eyes we watched you

And saw you pass away.

Although we loved you dearly,

We could not make you stay.

A golden heart stopped beating,

Hard-working hands at rest,

Our hearts were broken when God took you,

We know that He knows best.

Although I never got to meet him, Jim's legacy lives on in his wife and children, and in us all. He gave many years to East Rockaway as a firefighter, and touched more lives than any of us can ever count or know. In his memory, as well as all those who have given of themselves and served for their country, those of us who remain carry on the continued support of our fellow man.

"Death is as light as a feather, duty heavier than a mountain."

A month and a half has gone by and it still seems like a dream...we brought you Dad to the St.Patty's parade this year, held your card with you picture on it so you could see...even had you at the bar that night for a few drinks...and now my birthday has gone by as well without a happy birthday from you..just like last year since you had gotten your transplant only 2 days prior...I see you in my dreams and you tell me everything will be ok...I hope you're right..still, it seems unfair that you aren't here...but if this is the way it has to be for you to have peace then I will do my best to be less selfish and go on..I miss you and love you daddy...please keep an eye on us all...hope all is well where you are..Kelly

I am so sorry to learn of Jim's passing. I remember him with fondness, he always had a smile , a big wave and a friendly hello whenever I saw him. I will light a candle here for him in Ireland. Maybe he will see it as a big wave back to him. Sincere sympathy to Vicky, Kelly, Jimmy, and family.

Pat and I send our deepest condolences on the passing of Jim. I can still remember when Jim and Ed were living above the old VFW on Main Street and playing with their trains. Then we grew older and time and interests separated us for awhile. Then as adults our jobs and passions brought us together again. He was always on the ambulance when I was at the scene of an aided case. He made my job easier by always having all the information I needed to complete my forms for the Police Dept. Everyone whose come in contact with Jim will be missing him greatly. My sincerest regards to all the family. Pat and George Duncan

Jim

I know that you are resting peacefully now after what you went through - how brave you were.

My heart is very heavy knowing that you will not be with us here on earth, but I hope that you will shine upon us from where you are

resting, showing us the way.

You were a great friend, ex-chief, and human being - thanks for all that you offered me.

See you when the whistle blows........

I would like to express my deepest regret on the recent passing of Jim. My prayers are with you and your family.

He has been a great friend of mine for the past 5 years and the world will be harder without him here. I am very glad that got to see Jim on Monday morning I tried to tell him that he has been there for me when ever I needed him and that I loved him,I will miss him.

I wanted to always remember Jim by saying " I'll See Ya when the whistle Blows" Because he said it after every call. There are several calls where it was just me and Jim operating the ambulance by ourselves because we could not get a crew,he drove and I would Tech. the calls.

Jim took me under his wing and helped me through the fire dept. and most of all EMT school. Even on the outside of the dept we did alot together and thats what I enjoyed the most.

" Most of the time now I remember Jim,By thinking of the movie Stand By Me. it shows how friends stick together as me and Jim did."

I really dont know how to end this but my thoughts and well wishes to the Duncan family. God bless you all through this tring time
