Lauren Grandcolas
Grandcolas, Lauren Catuzzi of San Rafael, CA the victim of a terrorist attack on United Airlines Flight No. 93 on September 11, 2001 was born in Bloomington, Indiana on August 31, 1963. She was the daughter of Lawrence and Barbara Catuzzi of Houston, TX and Lake Toxaway, NC; the cherished and adored wife of Jack Grandcolas of San Rafael, CA; the loving sister of Dara Ann Near of Short Hills, NJ and Vaughn Catuzzi Lohec of Chatham, NJ. Lauren was a graduate of Stratford High School in Houston, TX and the University of Texas in Austin, where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. Lauren and Jack were members of the Marin Country Club in Novato, CA. While residing in San Francisco, she worked for the law firm of Thelin, Marlin, Johnson, and Bridges as a marketing executive, followed by positions at Price Waterhouse and Good Housekeeping Magazine. Most recently, Lauren was collaborating with a publisher on a book related to women's life-style achievements aimed at boosting the self-confidence of women specifically, and adult behavior in general. This nonfiction work was a long-term goal and source of great pride to her. Lauren so appreciated the outdoors that, in her spare time, she participated in hiking, jogging, roller blading, and kyacking amongst many other activities. Lauren was a strong and caring friend to everyone she knew; she will be dearly missed by all. In addition, she is survived by Robert C.H. Near, Phillip A. Lohec, and her nephews, Stephen Near, Kevin Near, Matthew Lohec, and her niece, Emily Lohec, as well as Jack's parents Leon and Rita Grandcolas, of Carmel, CA and Rick and Laura Grandcolas, Jim Grandcolas, Susan and Bill Bauer, Mark Grandcolas, Nancy and Alan Meyer, nine nieces and nephews and numerous other friends and relatives. Memorial services for Lauren will be held in Houston on Thursday, September 20, 2001 at 5:30 pm at Saint John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, and in San Francisco on September 22, 2001 at 9:30 am at the Mission San Rafael Catholic Church, Fifth Street, San Rafael. For those who wish, contributions may be made to the Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas Foundation, 600 Travis, Suite 4200, Houston, TX 77002. Lauren left us the way she lived her life, strong, determined, courageous and our heroine.

Each year on September 11, I stand before the plaque in San Rafael dedicated to Lauren and pray for her. She is an eternal soul, as we all are. This year, I was touched by the flowers from 'Mom and Dad' my tears and heartache were for Lauren's parents. God bless each of you and her husband Jack. I did not know Lauren, but she will forever be in my heart and in my prayers.

To the family of Lauren Grandcolas, my deepest condolences. I just watched the United 93 movie for the first time and felt compelled to search your name. I didn't know any of the 9/11 victims but I always cry when I remember that day. I was in the 10th grade and remember vividly that day that changed the course of our lives. Rest in peace. You are with God now.

Dear Lauren,
At The day of 11 september 2001, I was only a young man. I Have never known you, but Im sure you are a Queen of courage. I would really like to be a superman, to make the earth turn back, and to make you coming back with us. But Im' not as strong as you were. That's why I write these words for you. In France there is a song called "ADEU". I dedicace it to your honour. You always will protect us.

I saw the video interview with Jack Grandcolas about the birthing room in Lauren's memory at Marin General Hospital. I recently moved to the Bay area and was touched to learn about the amazing woman Lauren was and the equally amazing work her husband has done and continues to do to honor her legacy. It brought tears to my eyes. I am keeping Lauren and her family in my thoughts and prayers always.

In a report on Flight 93, a fellow passenger's stepmother told the story of her phone conversation with her stepdaughter from the plane that morning. Her stepdaughter told her a woman had suggested she call home. It still brings me to tears that someone in danger herself would be so good and kind as to worry about a another person that morning. From various reports on Flight 93, I believe the woman was Lauren Grandcolas. She did have a lovely, kind face.

I remember your smiles, your laughter, the spark in your eyes, and your positive, upbeat nature that made every problem seem trivial and every goal seem achievable. Like so many posters on here, i feel particularly drawn to Lauren's story. It appears that she truly was an angel on Earth. It's been ten years since that awful day when the world was turned on its head; so many innocent lives were lost and so many families torn apart. Know that you, and all of the other victims, are still very much in our minds and in our hearts.
Love and prayers to your family and friends, and to those others who were blessed enough to have met you.

My mother-in-law was one of the grief counselors in PA after 9/11. She remembered you. The way you said your wife's name and spoke about her is something she will remember for the rest of her life. When we were chosing names for our daughter in 2005 we had the name Lauren on our list. She told me she really loved that name. This week she finally told me why. Your wife was a beautiful, lovely woman and I hope my Lauren grows up to be the same.

To The beloved family of Lauren,
I am a homemaker and mother of three teenagers. I remember watching the events unfold on that day. One thought I begin each day with is how fortunate I am to be here raising my children and to have such a loving husband. The passengers as well as the families sacrificed much so I would have the priviledge to see my children grow up. Lauren was so brave and compassionate despite the frightening events that were unfolding around her. She is a role model for me. Each moment we have is a rare gift, and each life we touch has the opportunity to teach others. She has taught me much. I pray for you and hope that I can live my life with the enthusiam and compassion that she did.

Thinking of Lauren today. There is such relief that OBL is gone, but it can't bring her back. She was a bright presence at Price Waterhouse, always busy and chatty and had time for everyone. She was always being paged to the word processing center -- I can still hear it on the intercom in my mind. She was a bright light.

When eating a Luna Bar this morning, as I do every morning, I decided to take the time to read the dedication on the back of the package. A simple, heart-felt dedication to Lauren from her sisters intrigued my curiosity. I felt compelled to contact either Vaughn or Dara to let them know that their dedication had been printed and read in Atlanta, GA. In researching how to contact them, I was saddened to read the story that unfolded. My sympathies go out to you and your family for having to deal with such a tragic event and indescribable loss. You will all continue to inspire women of the world with the book "You can do it." I intend on suggesting it or distributing it to every woman I know. I am so glad to know that the proceeds will go to such a great foundation.

Dear Jack, I am so sorry for your loss. The two of you looked beautiful and happy. I am a Newark based Flight attendant. I was suppose to fly out of Newark on the 11th. I took off for maternity leave a week early. My first thoughts on that day were of potential children and pregnant women on the aircrafts. I read your story and my tears are evidence of how raw the wounds still are for me. I can't even imagine your pain. My prayers are w/you and her family. In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.
