Martin Groffman Obituary

GROFFMAN - Martin, a loving husband, father and grandfather of four, passed away in Texas on September 19, 2007. He was an accomplished educator and photographer. Marty was born in Brooklyn, taught in Queens and lived on Long Island and in Marathon in the Florida Keys. He earned BA and MA degrees at Brooklyn College and Columbia University. He was a pilot and navigator in the Army Air Corps, and a NYC teacher and Principal who also wrote science textbooks. But a hobby that started as a teenager, photography, was his passion. Much of his award winning work is abstract, with strong geometric design and scientific attention to detail. His interests in photography ranged from macro nature studies to travel scenes to abstracts and architectural design. Marty was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Constance. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Beth Groffman of Colleyville, TX, their children, Adam, Emily, Gabe and Kiera, his daughter Susan Groffman of Newport Beach, CA, his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Sidney and Beverly Groffman of Somerset, NJ and several nephews and cousins. There will be a graveside service at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept.23 at the Mount Hebron Cemetery in Flushing, NY. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory be made to the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, 1100 Simonton Street, Key West, FL 33040.

I have had the pleasure of being a close friend of Marty's through the arts community here in the Florida Keys. Marty's exceptional talents as an artist, photographer and teacher have been matched only by his great sense of humor, his devotion to the arts and his spirit of giving. Thanks to Marty the Florida Keys are creatively enriched! I will miss him greatly!
