Matilda LoFaro Obituary

LoFaro - Matilda, 97, of Henniker, NH, former longtime resident of Farmingdale, NY, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2025, surrounded by family. She was born on November 29, 1927, in Brooklyn, NY to her late parents, Michael Scavone and Maria (Albano) LoFaro. Matilda enjoyed her 30-year career in Admissions at the State University of NY Farmingdale, retiring at the age of 83. As a woman of deep Catholic faith, she was a longtime communicant at St. James in Seaford, NY. She relocated to Henniker in 2023 to be lovingly cared for by her son, Jerry, and daughter-in-law, Kathleen. Above all, Matilda loved and valued her large and growing family and enjoyed her role as the matriarch. She would often host legendary Sunday and holiday dinners in the home she and her husband built together in 1953. Matilda enjoyed many activities in life during her senior years, i.e., reading, knitting, and playing cards with her friends. She also loved the Farmingdale Public Library, and relished her time and activities with her fellow seniors there. When she was younger, she and her husband enjoyed traveling and taking in the sights. Matilda, who will be dearly missed, is survived by her two children, her daughter, Jilda Doukas and her husband George of Lindenhurst, NY, and her son, Jerry LoFaro and his wife Kathleen of Henniker, NH. She was the proud grandmother of eight grandchildren and great-grandmother of fourteen, with one on the way. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Matilda was predeceased by her husband, Hector LoFaro, who she married in 1949 and celebrated 64 years together until his passing in 2012. She was also predeceased by her son, Thomas LoFaro; her grandson, Gregory LoFaro; and her nine siblings. A graveside funeral service for Matilda will be held on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at 2:30 PM at the Calverton National Cemetery, 210 Princeton Boulevard, Calverton, NY 11933. Friends and family are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Matilda's memory to the Farmingdale Public Library, 116 Merritts Rd., Farmingdale, NY 11735 or a charity of your own choosing. Arrangements under the direction of the Bennett Funeral Home, 209 North Main Street, Concord, NH 03301.
