My brother Eric and I are members of the MTAPD, and my Brother recently became a k9 cop. He choose to name his dog after you after hearing your story and all the countless things your family has done for other military families. It is an honor and a priviledge to have "Matty" as a new member of our family and to be able to memoralize you. We will treat him well and I know he will represent your name proudly!! Thank you for all you have done and your sacrifice for our freedoms! God bless and RIP

briefly chatted with mr. baylis about his son and the ultimate sacrifice matt made for his country. i'm proud to have met mr. baylis, understand the story behind the picture and feel the tragedy in the loss of his son.

To the family and friends of Matthew Baylis:
I received a flyer in Oakdale about erecting those white pillars on the corner of the block like the ones from the Vanderbilt estate. I hope you don't mind that I had one erected on my corner which is Shore Dr and Hollywood Dr. It is to honor Matthew's memory and sacrifice. It was finished today. Some of the neighbors thought it would be nice to have a dedication. He was a fine young man and a true patriot. Matthew, his family & friends are often in my thoughts & prayers.

To Matt Baylis' family and friends,
When I met Matt he was dressed as a soldier trick or treating at my house on Halloween in 2004. (Other kids from the area may know my house, it's the one made to look like a haunted castle with a haunted graveyard tour.) He was so handsome and he looked so much like a soldier. I asked him if he, in fact, was a real soldier taking his little brother or sister around? He laughed and said, "No, but I will be one soon." I paused for a moment in thought and he said, "What, you're not going to try to talk me out of it?" I guess that's what most people did. My two older brothers served in Vietnam and it left lasting scars. I told him what he was doing was a noble thing and something to proud of. Then I urged him to try for an ROTC scholarship first and go to college for he was so young. He said, "They need me now." And they did. It was a hard argument to make. I told him I would pray for him and as he walked down my driveway I yelled "What's your name?" " Matt Baylis", he yelled back with a great big smile. That image is forever frozen in time in my memory. I did pray for him but he didn't make it. When I found out he was killed, I cried a river of tears.I attended his funeral and stood outside the church with a hundred other people. Most didn't even know him. You could hear a pin drop outside during the service. The only thing you could hear were people crying. Many were hardened Vets and Patriot Guard bikers who didn't even know Matt, but we all shed tears.
On Memorial Day, while visiting my Dad's grave at Calverton, I visited Matt's grave to place some flowers and had the honor of meeting his parents. At least I got to tell them how Matt inspired me to volunteer at the VA and write to soldiers and send packages to them through anysoldier.com. to let them know how much their service is appreciated. Two days ago on Halloween, I placed some flowers by the street sign named after him in Oakdale to remember that handsome brave young soldier who gave all for his country. He will always be a "Hero of the surge " to me. I will continue to honor his memory and pray for his soul and his family daily, but especially on Memorial Day and Halloween.
With deepest respect and sympathy, Lois Stafford

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Matt,
I am so glad you came over that night in February when you were last home. The last hug we shared only made me realize that we would soon be bridging the age gap and hanging out together when you came home. We think of you everyday and you are many times the topic of our breakfast or dinner conversations. I can still see you so clearly and hear your voice, which I have not always been able to do with others. The heavy ache in our hearts has not gone away. I believe it will always be there. Our family has been able to have some good times and laugh together again, yet we will never be the same. We are all missing you terribly. It's strange how we speak of you with such sadness and pride at the same time.
I know you are around us. I wish Emma was right when she said on our flight that we could go visit you in the clouds......

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To Matt's family and friends,
this poem helped a close family member of mine deal with a great loss. Maybe it will help each of you a little. Not a day goes by that we are not thinking of Matthew. We dedicate each and every unique sunset to him until we meet with him again.
When I come to the end of the day
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room.
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little, but not too long
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love we once shared-
Miss me, but let me go.
For this is a journey we all must take
And each must go alone.
It's all a part of the Maker's plan,
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick at heart
Go to the friends we know
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds.
Miss me, but let me go.
We love you Matt.

Dear family of Pfc. Matthew E. Baylis,
I am deeply saddened by the death of your loved one Matthew. I offer my most sincere condolences.
I am sorry that I was unable to attend his burial service to honor him and pay my respects to your family.
I hope you will find some comfort in knowing that countless Americans grieve with you and they greatly appreciate the ultimate sacrifice made by Matthew in the name of freedom. He died as a true American hero.
I hope also that one day in the not to distant future, on every occasion when you think of Matthew, that PRIDE... will be your strongest emotion.
I pledge to never forget his sacrifice... and yours. Rest in peace soldier. Job well done.
My sincerest sympathies,
Tom Ruley
