Patricia Tietjen Obituary

Tietjen - Patricia Ann, M.D., was born on June 30, 1958 at Saint Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan. She passed away on January 1, 2021 in Bonita Springs, Florida. She is predeceased by her father Francis, mother Ann and brother James. She is survived by her beloved husband, Joseph Gagliardo, Esq., step-son Anthony, brother William Tietjen, Esq., sister-in-law Kathleen and adored nephews, Billy and John. From the time she was a little girl, Patricia wanted to be a doctor. She graduated from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. She completed her postdoctoral training at both St Vincent's and Memorial Sloan Kettering. After her training, she continued to be affiliated with both hospitals and eventually became President of Saint Vincent's Medical Staff. In 2008, she became the Chair of the Department of Medicine for Danbury Hospital. In 2020 she became the Chief Medical Officer for Nuvance Health. Only 3% of Chief Medical Officers are women. Patricia loved to travel the world; but she felt most at home treating patients and working with doctors and staff especially nurses. One of the reasons she was chosen to be Chief Medical Officer was to enhance the patient experience and to improve physician and staff engagement. Almost as much as practicing medicine, Patricia loved to teach. She received the Richard J. Kennedy Attending Teacher of the Year Award four times. In her role as Chief Medical Officer, she had oversight of all aspects of Medical Education and was responsible for the development of a Network-wide teaching academy. Patricia combined her love of travel and medicine by yearly accompanying pilgrims to Lourdes attending to their medical needs. Funeral Arrangements entrusted to the Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons West Islip Funeral Home. Visitation to be held at Saint Patrick's Cathedral, NY, from 9:00AM until 9:55AM on Saturday, January 9, 2021. Patricia's Funeral Mass to follow at 10:00AM at Saint Patrick's Cathedral. Interment to follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park, Pinelawn, NY. In lieu of flowers, Patricia requested that a donation be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516 Topeka, Kansas 66675 www.chapeyfamily.com

Growing up in the same building as Pat, we rode the elevator together more times than I can remember. Soft spoken, she was always sweet and kind with a great smile. I'd read she was the Medical Director at nearby Danbury Hospital and then I ran into her at my local PO about 2 years ago. I told her how proud I was of her but humble as always, she just brushed it off. My sincere condolences to her entire family, especially her brother Billy. May she truly RIP
