Robert Kaliban Obituary

KALIBAN - Robert Dean (Bob) died December 12, 2020. He was 87. Originally from Lisbon, Iowa, Bob attended Loras College in Dubuque, where he encountered two loves of his life - acting, and more importantly, his beloved wife of 58 years, Pat "Pepper" Spaight.Upon graduating from Loras, Bob was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London where he studied acting for 2 years. Once back in the States, Bob and Pat married, but before embarking on their lives together, uncle Sam claimed Bob for 2 years of service in a military entertainment troop. Upon his discharge, Bob and Pat set out to New York to launch Bob's professional acting career. Bob got his big break on Broadway with a role in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." He appeared on stage by night, and by day, he was in recording studios and on set shooting commercials. It was heaven for Bob to be acting full-time.Bob's first commercial successes were long-running "on camera" campaigns where he famously appeared as the TY-D-BOL man, among many others. But it was his work in "voice overs" where he left an indelible mark on the business. Over the course of his legendary career, Bob performed in thousands of commercials, TV shows, radio dramas and more. He worked tirelessly on behalf of fellow actors, serving on the Screen Actors Guild Board for 20 years, including two terms as SAG President, New York Branch, and for over 40 years on the Board of Trustees for the SAG Pension and Health Plan. Despite his professional successes, Bob's most cherished role was "Family Man"; loving husband, devoted father and beloved "Grumpy" to his nine grandchildren. A true lover of life, he lived to bring a smile to everyone he encountered. Bob and Pat raised their family and resided in Garden City, NY for 50 years. After Pat's passing, Bob moved to the West Coast where he enjoyed the California sunshine and more time spent with family. He is survived by son Kal and wife Dawn, daughter Kathy and husband Chris Nolan, son Tim and wife Angie and grandchildren Jess, Brody, Riley, Nathan, Marley, Colby, Ryan, Milo and Camron.

I was part of the entertainment group with Bob in the army from 1957 to1959. We remained friends thru the years and met several times in Phoenix, AZ for lunch and dinner with the late Ken and Marilyn Delo. I'll never forget his great sense of humor, kindness and friendship. RIP my friend.

Bob & Pepper were neighbors & dear friends of ours in Point Lookout. Bob would often walk across to our home with some lovely delectable that his beloved Pepper had baked. He would then entertain us with wonderful stories & marvelous "dialects " from the countless performances he had as an esteemed Actor. He was a loving gem of a Man & we will miss his smiling face & infectious personality! Rest In Peace dear friend.
