Steve Melley

Melley - Steve, of North Merrick, NY, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2025, at the age of 87. Born in Brooklyn on January 15, 1938, Steve was one of six children Patricia (Sister Patricia CSJ), Rose, Muriel (Sister Stephen Maura CSJ), Hugh, Sheila; born to Irish immigrants, Michael Melley and Sarah Boyle, Up Donegal! Steve was raised in Brooklyn and attended St Teresa of Avila School, St. Augustine's High School and St John's University in Queens where he met his wife, Catherine Ann Houston. They were married on October 14, 1961 and started their family in Flatbush before moving to North Merrick on Long Island in 1972. Steve lost his beloved wife Catherine in 1989 at the young age of 51. Steve is survived by his sister, Muriel (Sister Stephen Maura CSJ), as well as five children, 13 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; Gerard and Dawn of Perrineville, NJ and their children Carolyn (Matthew) and Erin; Maureen and Brian Ruggeberg of Huntington, NY and their children Collin and Justin; Stephen of Merrick, NY and his children Sarah (David and great granddaughter Kit) and Paige (Michael); Michael and Kelly of Medfield, MA and their children Catherine, Neil, Clare and Brendan; and Dan and Cherylanne of London, England and their children Olivia, Darcie and Matilda. Steve will be remembered for his devotion to his family and his Catholic faith. He was never as happy as when he was hosting extended family parties including his annual Thanksgiving dinner (where the guest list occasionally topped into the 30s), Labor Day barbeque and Christmas Eve celebrations, as well as many more. He would invariably get choked up at the toast saying how proud he was of his children and grandchildren. He was fortunate to attend the weddings of three of his granddaughters in recent years where he was universally referred to by all guests as "Granddad." He even attended the Christening of his great granddaughter Kit a few weeks ago. His love, devotion, and humor will be missed by a very wide circle of family and friends. Steve was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Parish in North Merrick with a strong devotion and connection to both the Marianist Community of Chaminade High School and the Sisters of St Joseph. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, November 25, at 10:00am at Sacred Heart Church, 720 Merrick Ave., North Merrick, NY 11566.
