Sylvester Suda Obituary

Suda - Sylvester C., a longtime Shoreham, NY resident, died July 3, 2024, at the age of 90 in Saratoga Springs, NY. Syl was born and raised in a Czech farm community in Veseleyville, North Dakota. He started working at age 14. He volunteered for the US Army during the Korean War at age 18. He was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany for his ability to speak Czech, his first language. Through the GI bill, he earned his GED, then BS and MS degrees in applied mathematics at the University of North Dakota, and North Dakota State University. He was a specialist in measurement, applied statistics and physics. Syl worked as a scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory for 45 years accounting for nuclear materials for USA and international safeguards. Syl was married to the love of his life, Rullie Ann Suda, for 69 years. He is loved and remembered by his six children, Mark Suda (Julie), Luke Suda (Joan), Mary Suda, John Suda, Anne Mahoney (Stephen), and Jane Suda (Derek). He has 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He took great pride in his Czech heritage and passed that on to his family. He served on the council for the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences. He served as an extraordinary minister at St Mark's Roman Catholic Church in Shoreham, NY. Syl had a spirit of adventure that served him well as he traveled the world for work and fun. He loved Czech beer, ice cream and opera. His journey from working on his parents' farm in North Dakota to advising foreign governments on how to safeguard nuclear materials, is an amazing inspiration. His spirit lives on in his family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, July 15, 2024, at 10:00am at Our Lady of Grace Church, 73 Midline Road, Ballston Lake, NY.

Doyle and Karen Hembree

July 21, 2024

My husband Doyle Hembree had the pleasure of working with him. I got to know him and his sweet wife Rullie while in Vienna, Austria. The Sudas had so many memories of being on adventures in Vienna. Syl was able to teach me the basics of the waltz and he was such a gentleman.
Doyle and Syl traveled to other countries together while working for the IAEA. Syl was calm and a wonderful influence on other more volatile people they would come in contact with.
Doyle and I will always remember him fondly and great respect. The world would be a much better place if we had more men gracing this Earth.
