TUOHY - Walter John passed away peacefully on February 17, 2021 at age 99. He was born in Brooklyn, New York to John and Katherine Tuohy on January 26, 1922. Walter, the eldest of six children attended Bishop Laughlin High School in Brooklyn where he excelled in Track & Field and Academics. He is a US War Veteran, serving in the US Navy - Pacific Theatre during WW II. After the war Walter returned to Brooklyn where he would later meet his wife Jean. Walter and Jean were married for 65 years before her passing in 2014. Walter had a long career with New York Telephone Company and NYNEX Corp working as a lineman and later designing PBX systems. Walter and Jean raised their seven children on Sibley Place in Huntington Station where they lived for over 50 years. Their home became the center of activity for the neighborhood. On any given weekend Walter could be found fixing bicycles, designing wooden go-karts, building wooden toys and doll houses and telling silly jokes to the neighborhood children. His son Chris remarked "One of my fondest memories was my dad piling me, my brothers and sisters and half the neighborhood into the back of the station wagon for a Sunday at Jones Beach." Walter was devoted husband to Jean (nee Mekelburg), loving father of Robert, Patricia (William) Chapin, Philip (Ofelia), Christopher (Doreen), Janice, Douglas (Kristin) and Jonathan. Devoted grandfather of Kelly, Jason, Kasey, Jessica, Corey, Rebecca, Jordan, Chelsea, Justin, Molly, Emma, Olivia and Matthew and doting great grandfather of Sam, Marielle, Victoria, Whitney, Ava, Jaxon and Camden. A private burial service was held at Calverton National Cemetery.
