William J. Mahoney II
Sportsman and Handyman

William J. Mahoney II was an Adonis who did not sculpture his sleek physique at the gym. He was a player, and baseball was his game.

Mr. Mahoney, 37, coached his children's baseball teams and played center field in two adult leagues. A firefighter at Rescue Company 4 in Elmhurst, Queens, he was sentimental in his approach to the game. He had scribbled his wife's name inside his baseball glove. He also insisted that his family perform a good luck ritual before every game.

"We always had to either kiss his bat or touch his bat before he'd get up and touch the ball," his wife, Donna, said. "If we couldn't show up for the game, he made sure that we touched his bat before he left."

His ultimate baseball fantasy was to crisscross the country and visit famous baseball fields.

Around home in Bohemia, N.Y., he was the originator of projects that included making a vanity table for his wife and adding several rooms to the house. He also worked as a cabinetmaker and ran a tent-rental business on weekends.

"He wasn't just going to be sitting home watching a sitcom on a Friday night," said Ray Smith, a longtime friend and fellow firefighter. "He was always doing something. He was always looking to learn more."

Today we remembered your sacrifice. We discussed firehouse culture and what it means when we choose to become a fireman. We climbed Mt. Sherman today to honor you and those who died with you 20 years ago helping others. You are all in our hearts and your families in our prayers. We pass on to our next generation of firefighters your selflessness so that the world will never forget

Today at the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb in Wallace, Idaho, William J. Mahoney II was represented. I chose to represent William because he's Irish, like me. Firefighters from around North Idaho climbed the equivalent of 110 flights to honor those who lost their lives and also for those who continue to suffer. Climbers and volunteers read the name of a firefighter and their brief story. It was an incredibly touching day, and I'm honored to be a part of the memorial. Never forget.

I was watching a documentary about the Freedom Tower and saw many, many names engraved in the memorial. This name stood out and I decided to inquire further. My inquiry brought me here. No words really to describe the range of thoughts and emotions. An ordinary person. A normal man. Probably the kind of man who would have said "I'm no hero." And these things are what make men like this so much more. Real Americans. True New Yorkers. Only two words come to mind really. Pride and Gratitude. God Bless. Semper Fi..

Sir, your sacrifice for the country and people you love is indescribable. Your actions to give up your own life to ensure a stranger goes home to theirs is the greatest sacrifice an individual may take. Sir, I do not know you but I feel compelled to write this tribute to you. May you be in Gods loving company.

Mr. Mahoney - I do not know you. But today I climbed 110 stories behind my husband, who is a volunteer fire fighter in Colorado, wearing your image and your name next to my heart and remembering your sacrifice from 15 years ago.

To your family left behind - My heartfelt thanks. I know the role of the spouse, and I cannot imagine life if my guy didn't come back from a call. I hiked those steps thinking about you. They go, you go.

To William's family and friends: I was at the 911 Memorial in October 2013 and took a few photos. It must have been on William's birthday, because as I understand the Memorial Staff place a white rose on their names on their birthday. This photo always touches me with the names, the rose, and the people looking on. I hope it can be a comfort to you. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Thank you for being a hero. Thank you for being an outstanding citizen and role model to my son. Thank you for your sacrifice.

My deepest sympathy to William's family again. There are no words to say to help what you have gone through. I was watching the 9/11 show on CBS last night and Williams picture was on the next to last slide of the Firefighters that were lost. To The Mahoney Family,

This past weekend I rode in a 9/11 rememberance motorcycle ride in Knoxville, TN with hundreds of other riders. We were asked to carry a badge with us that had a NYFD or NYPD member who gave the ultimate sacrifice in 2001.
I have read about a husband and father who set the example and gave so much to so many and gave his all.

It was my Honor to have him ride with me on the Harley this past Sunday and truly feel he kept me safe that day. His badge now hangs around my flag attached to my monitor at work and now when someone ask about William J. Mahoney II I will share his story.

To the William Mahoney family,
My name is Kent Herrick and I'm a firefighter in the city of Denver, Colorado. Every year a stair climb event is held to remember those who have fallen on 9/11. There are 343 firefighter's from the Denver area, and also some from out of state who climb 110 flights of stairs in downtown Denver with full turnout gear as a tribute. Each firefighter climbs for a firefighter who gave the ultimate sacrifice on that day. I wanted to let you know that I had the honor to climb for William. If possible I would like to make contact with William's family to learn more about him. My email is [email protected]

Through the "project 2996" to remember the victims of 9/11, I am learning about William J. Mahoney II. I pray for his family, their loss was enormous. I have found that he was a coach for his children's baseball teams. The loss for American's was devastating, but nothing compared to his family's. We thank you for his heroism and are saddened by the cost.

Oh Billy, where do I begin? Seems like yesterday we were in high school(Connetquot)and fighting fires in Lakeland. You are and always will be an inspiration to me and other brother firemen.

I remember several events that occurred during our short brotherhood at Lakeland from wrecking your old truck responding from home, to cutting the chief's tie at a dinner. (lol)

Great times brother!

I will pay tribute to you and all our brothers, sisters and friends who were taken from us eight years ago.

I recently helped some retired FDNY brothers erect a beautiful memorial at our local VFW. There, I will play my pipes loud and clear and reflect on your legacy with every note, for the world to hear, so that September 11, 2001 will never be forgotten.

Miss you brother!

Dear William (or was it Bill?).... in anticipation of remembering the events that took place 7 years to the day, tomorrow.... I went searching to see the faces of who we lost. I wanted to find someone to pray for... as I weeped, failing to find a way to fathom the sheer mass of our loss... I looked for my name and I found yours. You look just like my little brother... I pray that your family is strong... that their pain has lessened with time and that they know... we will NEVER FORGET your great sacrifice. God bless your wife and family they will be in my prayers tomorrow. You are a hero.

My grandfather was a fireman, as was my uncle and my cousin recently retired from serving as a paramedic. We are a family of servers--teachers, firemen and paramedics. You are our shining example of being a hero. My entire family will remember all those who gave their lives, but more than that, we have decided to each choose a personal hero for our family. William J. Mahoney is one of our heroes. We hope your family is doing as well as can be expected. We wish for them the lives that you would have wanted them to have.
