Born June 19th, 1940, in Irwin, Pennsylvania, to the late Ellen Smith Steiner & Dwight Moody Steiner, Carol, at the age of 85, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 12th at her home. She was recently diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer.
Carol was one of two children. She attended school in Cheektowaga, New York, and graduated from Warwick High School in Virginia. She graduated from the Medical College of Virginia (now called VCU) in Richmond, Virginia, in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. She worked as an Intensive Care Unit nurse in Phoenix, Arizona and Newport News, Virginia, until she and an Army serviceman from Indiana named Henry met at Fort Eustis while on temporary duty. They married on October 10th, 1964, in Hampton, Virginia, and then started their life together back in Henry's home state. The couple was just over a month short of celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary when Henry passed away at home in 2014.
The couple moved to Connersville in 1969. Carol was a stay-at-home mother to their five children for several years but then returned to the nursing field and worked at Reid Hospital in the ER for twenty-four years, retiring in 2005, and then Fayette Hospital for seven years.
Carol was very active in her community. You could find her playing the organ and singing at local churches – St. Gabriel (twenty-five years), Trinity Episcopal, and St. Bridget in Liberty. She also loved being part of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren's activities whenever possible.
Her hobbies included sewing and quilting in her bedroom while listening to her favorite radio station, Classical 90.9 WGUC out of Cincinnati. Carol's home was her happy place. She loved playing her piano and being outside gardening while admiring the birds and all that Mother Nature had to offer. Her favorite holiday was Thanksgiving where she could show her love through cooking and just being around family. Her uplifting spirit was always felt especially when most needed by others and her contagious laugh was one of her best and now most memorable trademarks.
Survivors include two daughters, Cathy Burgdoerfer (Neil Getz) of Connersville and Stacy (Steve) Lorek of Loveland, Ohio, three sons, Eric (Anne) Orschell of Lexington, Kentucky, Mark (Laura) Orschell of Connersville and David (Julia) Orschell of Niceville, Florida, thirteen grandchildren, Evan (Emily), Noah and Graham (Anna) Orschell, Blake, Brandon, Lauryn (Zach Breneman) and Bo Burgdoerfer, Seth and Dylan Orschell, Taylor Orschell, David, Calvin, and Nolan Lorek, five great grandchildren, Cash Burgdoerfer, Hudsyn Burgdoerfer, Henry Grant Orschell, Judy Claire Orschell, Jack Adam Breneman and one brother Dwight Steiner Jr (Brina) of Sunbury, North Carolina, two sister-in-laws, Otta Lee (the late Ed) Cohen of Fort Myers, Florida, Dorothy (the late Ron) Sweetwood of McHenry, Illinois, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Henry & Carol did have a daughter and son who passed away at birth.
