Dorothy "Dot" Marion Patton Francis, 90, of Panama City, died March 6, 2010, at Community Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Dot was the daughter of Henry and Martha Ella Patton of Epworth, Ga., where she spent her early years. She became a resident of Panama City in 1957. A graduate of the University of Georgia with a master's degree from Florida State University, Dot began her career as a young teacher at various locations in Georgia and continued in the Bay County School System as a teacher at Hiland Park Elementary and as a counselor at Rutherford High School until her retirement in 1982. She was a founding member of Hiland Park Methodist Church and a member of the Bay Retired Educators Association and Order of the Eastern Star, Panama Chapter 102. A talented pianist, witty poet and storyteller, Dot was also a great lover of books and an avid sports fan.
Dot is survived by daughters, Trish Francis and Kate Peaden and husband, Mike; son-in-law, Joe Cearley; grandchildren, Jonathan Peaden and wife, Christine, Stephen Peaden and wife, Adria, Adam Peaden and wife, Lydia Ruth, Gretchen Hill and husband, David, and Jennifer Cearley; and great-grandchildren, Kathleen Peaden, Caroline Peaden, Jack Peaden, Aisling Hill, Arlo Hill, Joseph Cearley and Gillian Peaden; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Joseph Albert Francis; and daughter, Susan Francis Cearley.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, in the Chapel of Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Harry Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, at the funeral home.
