Henry Bernard Burke Jr., a lifelong resident of Marianna, Fla., passed away at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at Jackson County Hospital.
Born Nov. 17, 1927, in Pensacola, Fla., Henry moved to Marianna two years after his birth with his parents, Mildred Crane Burke and Henry B. Burke Sr. of DeFuniak Springs. A football quarterback and basketball player at Marianna High School, Henry graduated in 1945, and the following fall enrolled at the University of Alabama. In 1946, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served a year before returning to the University of Alabama. It was then that he met Mary Anne Jones of Booneville, Miss., and "The Stars Fell on Alabama." Henry graduated from the University of Alabama School of Business in 1949, married Mary Anne in July 1950 and returned to Marianna, where he worked as a salesman for McCaskill Ford Motor Co. for several years.
In 1961, Henry began his career as an agent with New York Life Insurance Co. which continued for more than 48 years, earning his CLU, ChFC designations and many other honors. Henry was a longtime member of the Rotary Club, serving as president and was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow of the club. He was a lifetime and active member of First United Methodist Church in Marianna, serving at various times on the Official Board, the Stewardship and Building Committees.
Henry was well-respected in the community as a man of integrity and of good humor. His many friends remember his love for fishing, golf, the beach and a good story.
Henry is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Anne; and two sons, Henry B. "Bo" Burke III, who is married to Jody, and Robert T. "Bob" Burke, who is married to Lori, both of Marianna. Two daughters also survive, Beverly, married to Austin McCaskill living in Tirana, Albania, and Elizabeth "Bess," married to Henry Hooks of Panama City. Mary Anne and Henry are grandparents to 13 grandchildren, Henry "Ben" Burke IV and wife, Kara, Daniel Burke, Robert Burke, Philip Burke, Annie Burke, Crystal Green Milton, Jonathan Green, Mary Grace McCaskill Otis and husband, Andrew, Kate McCaskill Dewey and husband, Derek, Ellen McCaskill, Elizabeth Hooks, Alison Hooks Bostwick and husband, Scott, and Michael Hooks; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 19, 2010, at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home, 3960 Lafayette St. Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2010, at First United Methodist Church of Marianna, 2901 Caledonia, with Dr. Bob C. McKibbon and the Rev. David Barkalow officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Henry's grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Dean Skaggs Sunday School Class and the "Coffee Club."
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you please send memori-als to First Methodist Church Marianna or the Alzheimer's Founda-tion, 3455 South St., Marianna, FL 32446.
