William Southerland Obituary

Mr. William "Steve" Southerland, Sr., 79, of Lynn Haven, FL, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017, surrounded by his family. Born in Panama City on Sept. 27, 1937, he was a graduate from Bay High School in the Class of 1956, and was a charter student at Gulf Coast Community College. Steve attended the University of Miami and Florida State University. He received his Funeral Service Degree from John A. Gupton School of Mortuary Science in Nashville, TN, in 1966. After graduation he returned home to join his parents, Ray and Bobbie Southerland, in the family business that was started in June of 1955. As President of Southerland Family Funeral Home, he expanded the business beyond Bay County to neighboring counties.

Throughout his career Steve was defined by his service to the community that he loved so much. He was the recipient of the Gulf Coast Community College Distinguished Service Award, where he served on the Foundation Board and remained a lifetime member. Steve was one of the founders of the Bay County Sheriff's Department Search and Rescue Dive Team. He also served on the board of the Anchorage Children's Home, the Board of Directors for Covenant Hospice of NW Florida, the Health South Advisory Board, and was the Past Chairman of the Easter Seal Drive. Steve was past president of the Florida Funeral Directors Association and past member of the National Funeral Directors Policy Board.

He was an ordained deacon of the Baptist faith and Deacon Emeritus of First Baptist Church of Panama City. Steve taught Sunday School most of his life and was a founding member of the Men's Ministry of First Baptist Church. He served as a member of the Disaster Relief Team of the Florida Southern Baptist Convention and was currently an active member of Emerald Coast Fellowship.

Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Bobbie Southerland. Of all his lifetime accomplishments, he was most proud of his family which includes: his loving wife of 55 years, Mary Sue Nordan Southerland, four children, Steve Southerland, II and wife Susan, Tim Southerland and wife Stacey, Suzanne S. Way and husband Bart, and Shane Southerland, all of Bay County; eleven grandchildren, Samantha Nobles and husband Daniel, Stephanie Southerland, Kayla Cook and husband Trevor, Ally Southerland, Blake Southerland and fiancé Cindy Sheffield, Abby Southerland, Katie Southerland, Grace Way, Andrew Southerland, Johnny Way, and Michael Southerland, and one great-grandchild due in July 2017; sister-in-law, Joanne McKinney and husband Mike, of Bay County, brothers-in-law, Bobby Nordan and wife Jeannine, of Walnut Creek, CA, and Charles Nordan and wife Marisa of Southport, FL, and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held on Monday, Jan. 30, 2017, at 10 a.m. at the Emerald Coast Fellowship with Dr. Steve Taylor and Mr. Jack Reese officiating. Interment will follow in Lynn Haven Cemetery. Steve was the first real friend I made upon moving to Florida in January of 1957. We shared many good times during our years at Gulf Coast. Although miles apart we remained good friends and I will miss one of the finest men I ever knew.

Your father was a kind and funny man with a warm heart and a tender spirit. I first got to know Steve when I joined the FFDA (now FCCFA) board - back in the orange jacket days :) He welcomed me to the fold with open arms and always provided me great counsel as I climbed the ladder to president. He was a man who was devoted to the Lord, his family, his business and his friends. I am honored to have known him. He was indeed a tremendous ambassador to our profession and will truly be missed. I still remember many of his stories and adventures in the Southerland motor home. Thank you for sharing your husband and father with all of us. He was truly an inspirational person. May the Lord watch over each of you as you travel through the journey of grief and may the memories you made with him forever remain in your hearts. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. God Bless!

What a great friend STEVE was to all who knew him! My mom was one of his biggest fans! Please know Mary Sue how much the Bell family loved Steve and You! We can't remember when we didn't! We go so far back and share so many great memories and sadness but through it all we all grew up loving the Lord, going to church together and raising our kids the same! Know all our family is praying for you and your family as you go thru this goodbye knowing you will see him again with that great smile he always had for everyone! My heart is sad but I know he is happy in the presence of our Lord. Prayers for all of you for the next few days! Just know how many people love you! What a treasure that is! ❤Martha Patterson

As Christians, we are assured that "Big Steve" is with his Lord now, smiling down on us all. While we celebrate his life, we also offer our sincere sympathy and prayers for family and friends who will miss him deeply until all are reunited in the Lord.

Dear Southerland family, I wish I could be with you on this day to personally give you a big hug. I was saddened to hear of Steve's passing and have spent the last day reflecting on his influence in my life. We spent a lot of time together during our days with the Florida Funeral Directors Assoc., and he would very often serve as my mentor whenever a challenge would arise. Actually, he served double duty: mentor and Chaplain. With Steve present, we never had to worry about an invocation! I guess that is how I will always remember him: a consummate professional and a devout Christian. Vocation and Invocation. All the best to the Southerland family during your (our) time of loss. - Greg Quattlebaum.
