KULPMONT - It is with great sadness and fond memories that the family of Floyd D. Blethen, 90, a longtime resident of Lovettsville, Virginia, and a recent resident of Serenity Gardens, in Kulpmont, announce his passing, Friday, Aug. 23, 2024.
He was born in Thorndike, Maine, in 1934, a son of the late George and Annie (Wilton) Blethen.
Floyd joined the military as soon as he could and was a U.S. Army veteran.
He had lived all over the East Coast while working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He began as a grain inspector and ended his 38-year career in 1992 as chief of market news for the Department of Agriculture.
Floyd was a very active member of the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family, in Washington, D.C. For many years he ran the parish bingo games.
A great lover of nature, he enjoyed an active retirement with involvement in a variety of agricultural pursuits, such as the farmer's market, Shiitake mushroom farming, raising chickens, supporting the local 4-H, membership in the Lovettsville Game Club, the American Legion, organizing fishing derbies, researching and compiling his genealogy and being supportive of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
We will miss Pop's hearty laughter, his pointing out of birch trees and his reminder to not point at people, lest you find three fingers pointing back at you.
Survivors include his wife, Vera (Bonshock); four children, David, Lesia, Joe and Irene; 10 grandchildren, Eric, Dana, Renee, Shaun, Alex, Samantha, Victoria, Kaylee, Sarah and Joey; and 15 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepson, Peter; and his siblings, Burleigh, Basil, Perry, Parker, Edith, Roger and Stacy.
