Joseph V. Checchi

1926 - 2016

SHAMOKIN - Joseph V. Checchi, 89, of 201 W. Mulberry St., Apt 504, and formerly of 822 W. Holly St., Coal Township, passed away Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016, at his residence.
Born in Shamokin, Dec. 29, 1926, he was a son of the late Mauro and the late Rose (Stanker) Checchi.
He was a lifelong resident of the Shamokin-Coal Township area.
He was employed through the carpenter's union and served as construction superintendent at various construction sites.
On Dec. 24, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio, he married Violet Bodgan, who proceeded him in death July 3, 1987.
He was a graduate of Coal Township High School Class of 1944.
He was a member of Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church, Elysburg, the Moose and American Legion.
Joseph entered active duty in the U.S. Army March 26, 1945, in New Cumberland. During his enlistment, he served with the 108 Machine Record Unit. He received the World War II Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal and Good Conduct Medal H was honorably discharged Nov. 19, 1946, from Fort Jay, N.Y.
He is survived by his children, Mauro Checchi and his wife, Dorothy, of New Jersey, Robert Checchi and his wife, Diane, of Coal Township, and Cheryl Reuter and her husband, Dave, of Tennessee; His longtime companion, Ann Stamets; six grandchildren, Nichole, Joseph, Kristin, Angela, Christopher and Dominique; three great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Devon and Oliver; a sister, Adeline Talisecky, of Coal Township; a brother, James Checchi and wife, Vera, of Rochester, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Joseph; a brother, Mauro Checchi; and six sisters, Dorothy Rickert, Elizabeth Rupp, Anna Smeltzer, Marie Dinger, Stella Weaver and Emma Tharp.

CHECCHI - Joseph V. Checchi, 89, of 201 W. Mulberry St., Apt 504, and formerly of 822 W. Holly St., Coal Township. There will be no viewing or hours of calling. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Leonard J. Lucas Funeral Home Ltd., 120 S. Market St., Shamokin, Leonard J. Lucas Jr., supervisor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church, 103 W. Center St., Elysburg, 17824.
