Syl Worhacz

SHAMOKIN — Syl Worhacz, 87, of 241 S. First St., died peacefully in his sleep at 2 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010.

Born Feb. 9, 1923, in Shamokin, he was a son of the late Theodore F. and Pearl (Macuch) Worhacz. He was one of 15 children.

Syl was a 1941 graduate of Shamokin High School.

Upon graduation from high school, he entered training to be part of the highly regarded Amphibious Forces of the U.S. Navy. During World War II, he did battle in some of the most perilous places in the Asiatic Pacific.

On Feb. 6, 1951, in Transfiguration Catholic Church, Shamokin, he married Peggy Alexander, who preceded him in death on April 4, 1993.

He was the owner/operator of Syl Worhacz Ford in Shamokin for nearly 50 years.

Syl was the recipient of many prestigious honors presented by Ford Motor Company, most notably the President's Award, which he received twice. This honor for excellence in sales and customer service was only presented to 75 out of 6,000 Ford dealers across the United States.

Syl was a lifelong member of Transfiguration Catholic Church, Shamokin.

Survivors include two sons, Greg Worhacz and wife Diane, and Tim Worhacz and wife Patty, all of Shamokin; two daughters, Margaret Worhacz, of Shamokin, and Sylvia Maus, of Harrisburg; six grandchildren, Joshua Maus, of Harrisburg, Tim Worhacz and Alexander Worhacz, both of Kulpmont, Nicole Scicchitano, Andrea Lupotsky and Kelly Worhacz, all of Shamokin; two great-grandchildren, Dallas Scicchitano, of Shamokin, and Joshua Maus, of Harrisburg; a sister, Vera Spotts and husband Robert, of Trevorton Road; a brother, Daniel Worhacz, of Rochester, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Walter, Russell, John, Phillip, Michael, Teddy and Andrew Worhacz, and five sisters, Olga, Lovey and Millie Worhacz, Ophelia Kulonda and Mary Nicholas.

WORHACZ — Syl Worhacz, 87, of 241 S. First St., Shamokin. Divine Liturgy will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Transfiguration Catholic Church, Shamokin, with the Rev. Stepan Bilyk as celebrant. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery, Coal Township. Viewing will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Stephen A. Chowka Funeral Home, 114 N. Shamokin St., Shamokin.
