Age: 87 • Waynesboro, VA

Evelyn Heck, 87, a resident of Summit Square Retirement Community, passed away peacefully Sunday evening October 8, 2017. The only child of the late Charles and Julia Macza Haas, she was a first generation American born June 30, 1930, in Yonkers, NY. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Gerald Lee Heck, who passed in 2006.

A classical pianist, Evelyn attended MacMurray College for Women in Jacksonville, IL, and the Juilliard School of Music in New York, NY. She was mother to two children, Dr. Christopher Charles Heck of Waynesboro, VA, and Karen Lee Heck of Stamford, CT. She is also survived by six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Her husband, Gerald, was an international banker whose work took the family overseas to such places as India, Japan, and Hong Kong. Evelyn became a consummate hostess as was expected in these foreign lands at the time, while raising her children and teaching piano. She created many long lasting friendships that spanned decades and these relationships created a thread of continuity through a life that was filled with many changes. She was a beautiful, gracious person, often caring to those in need, and lightening the mood with her droll sense of humor. A private family memorial will be held in the future at Arlington National Cemetery where Evelyn will be placed with her husband of 55 years.

We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and CNA's at Summit Square for their commitment to caring for our mother through thick and thin.
