Carolyne Wallace Obituary

Carolyne passed away peacefully on April 30, 2021 surrounded by family.
Carolyne was born Aug. 7, 1937, to E. Lucille Johnston Lauderdale and Charles W. Lauderdale, Jr. in Beaumont, Texas. Carolyne graduated from high school in Midland, Texas, and attended Texas Tech University where she said she majored in MRS. She obtained her MRS when she met the love of her life, Charles "Chick" Wallace. They married in 1957 and had 63-plus happy years together. Carolyne worked at the University of Alaska for 28 years and served on the Staff Counsel and Grievance Committees and served on the University Foundation Board for several years. She received the meritorious service award from the university in 2018. She was active in the Garden Club, Republican Women, PEO, loved playing bridge and volunteering for various functions to improve the Fairbanks community. She was an avid supporter of the military community, both the Army and Air Force.
A couple of her favorite sayings: "When I die, tell the undertaker to drive real slow when he passes the hair salon so I can get my hair done." Also, "Do not go and stand between me and the door as I will run over you." She was always dressed to the nines and ready for a good party whether throwing or attending. Anyone who knew Carolyne knew she was a true Southern belle who took pride in looking her best. She was affectionately known as "the velvet glove with the iron fist" because behind the warm Southern façade was a fearless woman with a backbone of steel. People were always a little taken aback by her love of Alaska. Chick had asked if she wanted to relocate for health reasons and she always replied no, this is my home and where my friends are. Her kind and loving nature made her "Mom" to more people than the family realized. Her opinions and her sense of fairness made her opinions sought after.
Carolyne is survived by husband, Chick; her children, Clay (Rochelle), Chris, Coke (Joann), Cullen and Courtney Pagh (Steven); eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and brothers, Charles W. Lauderdale, III and Michael E. Lauderdale.

I will always remember Carolyne as a shining star. Her humor would have the entire room laughing. My favorite story that she told was about her airline trip from Texas with her Tofurkey. It was a joy knowing all the “C’s” at West Valley high school and being updated about them over the decades from a proud mom. Rest In Peace Texas gal.

Dear Carolyne, I never had the pleasure of meeting you but I want to thank you for raising one of the most wonderful humans I have had the pleasure to know. I've only known Courtney for a few years but she has become one of my best life long friends and is a rock to all who need her to be one. She would not be the strong, courageous woman she is today if not for your example and love. I love hearing her tell stories about how as a little girl she would watch you get ready to go to or host a party. The external beauty you passed on to her is evident to anyone passing by, but the internal beauty she inherited from you is truly something to behold. I've seen her make a total stranger's day just by giving them a quick compliment, while walking down the street. Thank you so much for what you've given to this world, Carolyne. Prayers and love to your family.

As admin to the director of the UAF Natural Resources Management department, Carolyne adopted every faculty member, staff and student as her own family. She was the glue that held that department together. Her care, laughter, confidence, great sense of humor, southern charm, and ability to heal a lot of wounds and bruised egos was legendary. There is no “resting in peace” for Carolyne. There’s a good old fashioned promenade going on with lots of laughter!
