Freddie Stevens Obituary

Freddie Stevens passed away on February 1, at the age of 83 from complications due to a heart attack. He was youngest of seven children, born in Eagle on April 28, 1940, to Arthur and Sophie (Andrews) Stevens.
Freddie left Eagle at the age of 15 to complete high school in Fairbanks and then enlisted in the Navy, where he served honorably as Seaman 1st Class (Gunnery). Following his honorable discharge in 1961 he managed a factory in San Fransisco, where he met and married his wife, Sharon.
Freddie returned to Fairbanks in 1975 and worked for the Operators Union, where he dispatched workers to construct the pipeline. He returned to Eagle in 1978 and immediately assumed the mantle of leadership, serving as Tribal Chief from 1978-83, and from 2015-18. His visionary leadership brought many improvements to the village, including the construction of the road to the site where the village relocated after the disastrous flood of 2011.
Hunter, fisher, husband, father, grand and great-grand father, Freddie is survived by daughter Joy (Jim) Murphy, son Richard Marshall (Karen), grandchildren Sean (Tiffany) Michelle (Jacob), great-grandchildren Jeremyah, Emma, Aliza, Abby and Clyde Murphy, numerous nieces and nephews, and God daughter Jodie Potts-Joseph. He was pre-deceased by his parents, and all his siblings: Silas, Walter, Andy, Titus, Martha and Clara, and Cousin Margaret Carroll of Ft Yukon.
A celebration of life will be held from 1-3 p.m. on March 10, at the Chief David Salmon Tribal Hall; internment in Eagle will occur Memorial Day weekend in Eagle.
