John Bartlett Obituary

John Bartlett, born in 1948, beloved father and friend, went to the other side Nov. 28, 2016. He'll be welcomed there by his parents, Jack and Paula, both teachers here in Fairbanks for many years, and by his brother, James.
John is mourned on this side by his sister, Kate Lacher and husband Bill; his son, James, and wife Cecilie; daughter Jesse and husband Bryan; as well as many friends, artists and patrons of the arts. John leaves two grandchildren, Raven Rose and Una Elva. As the root, so the sprouts, endowed with their grandfather's sweetness of spirit.
He is also survived by his brother's wife, Annette Bartlett; their children, Jameson and Caitlin Bartlett; fiancé Joey Centofanti, as well as Kate and Bill's children, Janna Karnezis and husband Dimitri, and Ben and wife Caitlin Lacher.
John graduated from Lathrop High School in 1966, signed up with the Navy and served on board an aircraft carrier in Vietnam. He was a pipefitter. He slept under the catapult launcher; said he "never heard 'em."
Well, whatever he may have lost in hearing he made up for in sight and insight.
His skills as a carpenter were highly valued at Alaska theaters. He worked at Anchorage Opera and Fairbanks Shakespeare Theatre, as well as just about every theatrical venue in our town, making many a stage designer's vision possible during the past 50 years. He collaborated with many artists and craftspeople, was a pleasure to work with and easy to be with.
An unassuming, kind man with a massive bear hug and a ready word of encouragement, praise, and should one ask, an eye popping massage, loosening knots as stubborn as himself; that was John Bartlett.
He had an eye for beauty and proportion, which he expressed in wood, metal, ivory and the occasional well-placed semi-precious stone. His boxes and sculptures are included in the University of Alaska Fairbanks Museum of the North Collection, Noel Wien Library, Palace Theatre and homes high and humble. John gave freely of his gifts, as though it would be wrong to do otherwise.
If you wish to attend the life celebration of John F. Bartlett, come to the Palace Theatre at 2 p.m. Jan. 1. We invite you to share a story and listen to some music, so that we may remember John together.

Here it is 2023, and I am just learning of John´s passing, which has a lot too with me moving to Nome over 20 years ago. But still I remember his gentleness, his talent, the interest we shared in NW Alaska, and I continue to cherish the round bentwood box he gifted me so many years ago when Fairbanks was still my home and we would still meet - although never enough. You are remembered in a warm place in my heart, John.

I will so miss my longtime friend and was disappointed the big storm kept me from Fairbanks on Jan.1st and John's Celebration of Life.
A bright a gentle soul has moved on.
John, his family and friends have been, and are, a joy among my life experiences. Ma and Pa Bartlett even provided me with shelter during a lean time and I often had the pleasure of playing music with brother Jim.
Last summer I had a good visit with John. We were sitting on the grass and my knee was interfering with my getting up. John reached out, took my hand and pulled me up as if I were a leaf.
I'll never forget his many strengths.

Dear family and friends, I am particularly saddened to hear of John's passing. He and I were first sweethearts in High School and I have never forgotten his unique tenderness in all things. I had hoped to see John again one day, but I have missed my chance to say how he has always been a warm memory in my life. I am unable to attend the service planned for Jan. 1st, but I send a virtual hug to Katy and Jim. How time has flown!

1969 through 1972 at UAF hanging out with John and Jim, Styrofoam Mountain and the Christian Licorice Shop. Good music, good friends, good times and lots of laughter and love. John will not be forgotten in my heart. White light and healing prayers to his family.Skye

I remember John from classes we had together; he was always willing to listen and help others. Ditto's on Jim's comment about John's acting abilities (I was in the Stagecraft crew under Robert Dunlap).

I took to John early on and I realize now that it was because he was like my father--quiet and steady and everyone liked him and those who knew him more loved him. He's all around us now & we'll be talking. Much love to James and Jesse.

Jesse and James, I am so sorry to hear about your father. He will be remembered by so many who crossed his path and his artwork and craft will live on for years and years. Please keep his memories alive also because God promises to do the same at Malachi 3:16.

May God comfort you during this hard time.

It was my pleasure to work with John in several Gene DeWild-directed high school plays. He was a gifted actor and a generous colleague. My sympathies to his family.
