Leila Peterman Obituary

The life of Leila Ruth (Fonstad) Peterman was ended suddenly on the evening of Dec. 22, 2015. After 84 remarkable years of adventure, dedicated service, love and family, she was taken to her heavenly home. There, she is happily reunited with her husband, Kenneth Peterman; parents Olaf and Mary (Shelsted) Fonstad, brother Edgar Fonstad, sister Elna Hettrick, daughter Alaine Peterman, son-in-law Robert Burnett, and granddaughter Cassandra Holderby.
Born and raised in the small farming town of Torquay, Saskatchewan, Canada, Leila valued her family and her personal relationship with Christ. Venturing from her humble home, she graduated from Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute in Outlook, Saskatchewan. After receiving her nursing degree in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan, she began her life's adventure by marrying the love of her life, Kenneth Peterman.
After living in California, Montana, several villages throughout Alaska, and North Dakota, they settled just north of Fairbanks in 1968, where she remained even after her husband's passing.
Ever the "pioneer woman," Leila was strong, independent, determined and hardworking. She was kind and gracious, always having time for cookies and tea if one were to stop by for a visit. Her family and church were significant aspects of her life. She spent much of her life volunteering, helping others and stepping in wherever needed.
Many lives will feel a void without her here, as her friendship, prayer, dedication and service touched numerous people. Among those are her brothers, David and Russel Fonstad, and sister MaryAnn Nostbakken, and their spouses; children Leanne Burnett, Donna and Gene Holderby, Russell and June Peterman, Kevin and Jen Peterman, grandchildren Bethany and Greg Harris, Kendra and Shane Suddarth, Valerie, Abigail and Geneva Holderby, Carmen Catledge, Renee and Michael Heintz, Brayden and Tyler Deweese; and great-grandchildren Rylee and Gideon Suddarth and unborn baby Heintz.
A service to honor her life will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 9, at Jubilee Worship Center, 541 3rd Street in Fairbanks.
Her family wishes peace to those grieving with them and asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her memory to Intercultural Assembly of God, 720 25th Ave., Fairbanks, AK 99701 or LCBI, P.O. Box 459, Outlook, Saskatchewan, Canada S0L 2N0.

Please accept my condolences. Leila and I were pen pals through Help Hospitalized Veterans. I hope she received the gift I sent her before she passed. I will really miss her wonderful letters. God bless all of you. My prayers are with you.

We got such a nice Christmas card. Your mother spoke so sincerely and with much love. It seems to me that the older she got, the more open she was about herself and her feelings. We cannot truly tell you how deeply we grieve her passing. During our life sometimes there is a situation or a person who affects our lives-- and she is that person!!

I was just thinking about calling to wish Leila a Metry Christmas when I got the call saying she had gone "Home." What a wonderful time she must have had celebrating Christmas with Jesus!

Many times I remember my mom (Usona Larsen) calling to say she was staying at Leila's. They always played scrabble & just rested together remembering the old days. Leila even allowed me to stay at her house several times when I'd come to Fairbanks, didn't need much notice, just a phone call the day I was getting in.

I keep thinking that I'm hearing a lovely melody from heaven with Ruth Duncklee playing the piano, while Ruth, Leila, & Mom are singing those good old hymns that I grew up hearing.

My sincere condolences to the family. May God wrap His loving arms around you at this time & in the future as you have those thoughts of wanting to call her & realizing she's not there.

Love & blessings to you all.

Our thoughts and prayers are with each and every one of Leila's family and extended family. She was a very special woman and we will always remember her quiet, loving, serving way. The world would be much improved if more of us were like Leila. Wish we could be there next weekend but it just won't work. Hope the live streaming idea works out. Imagine the joy in heaven as she and Ken and Mom and Dad, Grandma and Grandpa etc. are all reunited. Love and Hugs to all.

I had just sent her Christmas card, as she blessed me with sending old Evangels/Lives to me in Barrow many years, as I had enjoyed reading thru out my youth & adulthood. We were blessed attending in early 1970's at Graehel AOG basement church w/Pastor Dale & Mary Umphreys and met up with Leila & Ken & family there, thru out the years I always felt at home/welcomed at ICAOG, or whenever I visited and saw Leila she was always so kind & loving to me & my little Mary when we attended ICAOG while attending UA-F BA-Inupiaq Eskimo Language. May she rest in peace, love u all.

Auntie Leila and Uncle Ken were rare people that one was privileged to be part of their lives. Both were always ready with an eye-crinkling smile or a warm hand of comfort. Whenever they visited Saskatchewan, they brought a joy and love that seemed to have no bounds even in sad or difficult times. What I will forever remember about Auntie Leila were her hugs. She wrapped you in her arms as though she promised to never let go . . . even when she was gone.

All of you are in my thoughts and heart.

We will miss her annual Christmas letters, received for many years. She and Ken stopped by often on their return to AK from winters in the south, always .with great stories. May God comfort all who loved Leila.

Leila and her husband, Ken, helped to build our home in Healy in 1997. Leila had the sweetest spirit and was aways ready to lend a helping hand.

My prayers are with your family, as you grieve losing your much-loved Mom/Grammy. I sure enjoyed meeting her at Gideon's birthday party a few years ago. What a spry, spunky lady --- she had a sharp memory and told me all sorts of interesting facts about living in Fox in the 60's and 70's.I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with her, and I know she will be greatly missed. Thank you for such a lovely description of her life -- it really highlights her faith in the Lord and her faithfulness to her family.

I was blessed to know Leila, or as we called her Mrs Peterman, we grew up near this family and grew to know them. She was always warm and loving, and willing to share her house with us kids. I will miss her but rejoice for her to be at the right side of God, and will one day see her again...
Prayers for her kids and family...

Leila was a dear friend and a good neighbor of ours for over 30 years. She loved our Lord and lived her faith. She was happily engaged in service to the end. We'll miss her, but we know she is with Jesus.

To the family, so very sorry for your loss, your precious family will remain in our prayers. As you take each day one step at a time and hold on to the loving memories of your loved one, may God grant you strength to see each day through. 2 Corinthians 4:7
