Linda Manns Obituary

Following a long, courageous battle with cancer, Linda Kay Manns went home to be with the Lord at the age of 43 on Tuesday, Aug.19, 2008.

Linda was a pioneer's daughter raised at the family's homestead, Crevice Creek Ranch, in the heart of the Brooks Range. She was a very accomplished woman who was as much at home in the Alaska outdoors as she was living the "city life."

Linda could shoot, hunt, fish and ride a horse or snowmachine with the best of them.

But her interests were far more varied. As a businesswoman and hostess, she had few equals.

And toward the end of her life, one of her great pleasures was the success she enjoyed when she opened her bed and breakfast.

Linda's greatest pride was reserved for her family, especially her two boys.

She embraced being a wife and mother, providing a warm, hospitable home for her family and friends.

She loved to cook and entertain -- providing wonderful meals was her specialty.

Before her medical retirement, Linda served in the Fairbanks Governor's Office for Gov. Sarah Palin.

Previously, she was deputy director of Boards and Commissions for Gov. Murkowski, as well as a special assistant.

She managed the University of Alaska Southeast bookstore in Juneau for many years. She was a Rotarian and served as member and president of various Republican women's groups.

Linda took great delight in "opening" her oncologist's eyes to the possibility that conservative politics have merit.

She also was the first Miss Alaska Teen USA in 1983.

From the moment Linda first opened her eyes, her family says she charmed everyone she met. She enjoyed a legion of friends from all walks of life who remain loyal and loving.

Linda will be remembered fondly for her wonderful sense of humor and quick laughter, her high drive and energy and the sheer delight she took in life.

Linda is survived by her husband, Jeff Manns; her two sons, Blake and Garret; her stepsons, Dustin, Jordan and Dakota; her mother, Lillian Fickus; her sister, Deborah Fickus Luper; her two brothers, Matt and Timothy Fickus, and their children, Michael Luper, Denali and Matthew Fickus; and Kylie, Aana and Dawson Fickus; a half-sister, Sandy Thomas, and a half-brother, Bill Oley, of Pennsylvania.

She was preceded in death by her beloved father, William "Bill" Fickus.

A funeral will be held at 5 p.m., Monday, Aug. 25, at Door of Hope Church, 270 Fairhill Road.

Linda's husband and family ask that donations be made to local breast cancer groups in lieu of flowers.

Arrangements were by Northern Lights Mortuary and Crematory.

Mrs Fickus Debbie Matt Tim Just a voice from the past everyone. Although I haven't seen you guys in almost 25 years, my memories of all are like it was yesterday. When I learned of Linda's passing my rush of emotions were overwhelming; I was deeply saddened and felt a need to share the two things I knew to be true about your daughter & sister. (1)The world most definately is a better place because she was here! (2) I am most certainly a better person for having known her! My prayers are with you all.

Dear sweet friend,
I knew you in Jr. High and High School and you were the epitomy of kindness and being an amazing Alaskan woman all rolled into one. My father visited your family Brooks Range homestead by plane long ago and related to me how impressed he was with your family. I never got to tell you that.
Your family deserves to be honored and your in my heart forever.

Dear Deborah, Jeff & Family:
Linda was like the whitehot sizzle of a sparkler on the 4th of July. She lit up every life she came in contact with and we were so blessed to have been touched by her. We had our times of prayer when we both worked in the Capitol. I will miss her tremendously.

Linda was a beautiful and giving person who left a lasting impression on me. I will never forget the time that I was stranded in the Juneau airport and she invited me back to her house for conversation and a warm meal. At that time, she barely knew me, yet she was willing to open her heart and home to me. I will be forever grateful for the graciousness and kindness that she showed in all aspects of her life. We are all blessed for having had her in our lives. Until we meet again...

Linda was a dear friend of mine from high school, and it is with great sadness that I learn of the world being smaller because of her passing. Her beauty showed all the time, as she always had a smile and a kind word for everyone... Rest in peace, Linda...

I remember Linda when she lived next door to us on Dartmouth Rd in Fairbanks. We met the first time on the bus heading to West Valley High School. She was a wonderfully bright and friendly girl with a smile for everyone she met. We of course lost touch when i moved away. A mutual friend in Fairbanks let me know of her passing. Linda touches my life as she so obviously touched so many others. My thoughts and prayers go out to her friends, family and especially her sons. She will be missed.

Linda was a beautiful person to be around. From the beginnining of our friendship, she was the one to always put you first. When diagonosed, she took her battle head on and fought with tenacity every day and forgetting her pain to listen to everyone else's complaints. She was one of those who always gave and never asked for anything in return. Linda was a true friend and I will miss her dearly. Give strenght to Jeff, Blake, Garret and other family members during these times.

Linda was a hard worker and a gracious lady. With Linda's help, the Office of Boards and Commissions under Governor Frank Murkowski was in good order. She was meticulous and professional. I will always remember the nice risotto meal and her beautiful flowers at her home in Juneau. She showed me the Fairbanks B&B while it was under construction and it was her dream come true. Her dedication and love for her family and the State of Alaska were amazing. She is in heaven now with no more pain or sickness, but will be missed very much. God Bless.

I have so many fond memories of spending time with Linda. I met her when she came to Fairbanks in the 9th grade. We were immediate friends and kept in touch all these years. I will forever remember her as kind, caring and very committed to a conservative way of life. I know she will always be with us. Rest in peace my friend!
