Michael P. Pope

1963 - 2016

Michael P. Pope, 51, of Fairbanks, passed away from a fatal gunshot. Michael had not been heard from since Nov. 25, 2015. He was reported missing on Dec. 4, 2015. His body was discovered on his property where he was building a cabin.
Michael was born Dec. 13, 1963, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He always excelled at anything he attempted. Michael was very artistically talented and taught himself to play the piano and guitar. While in high school, he marched in the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, with "The All City Band," and in his senior year, was the drum major for his high school band.
In 1988, Michael entered the Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Inchon (LPH 12). Nothing but the highest praise has been used to describe Michael's time with the Navy. During his time with the Navy, he was once recommended for the "Sailor of the Month."
After his Navy years, Michael became a self-taught motorcycle mechanic. He worked for a time in Southern California. After moving to the Fairbanks area, his knowledge and expertise included the world of snowmobiles. He enjoyed his work and absolutely loved Alaska.
Michael is survived by his parents, three brothers, and a sister-in-law. He is fondly remembered by his brothers as being very protective and an over-all great "Big Brother."
Sometimes it is the little things that are remembered. One thing is certain, Michael pretty much got along with everyone.
Graveside services with military funeral honors will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 14, at Birch Hill Cemetery, in Fairbanks.
