Our brother, father, uncle, cousin and friend Nathan Lee Charlie, "Noonie," 43, passed too soon on July 4, 2021. Nathan was born Sept. 29, 1977.
Nathan was raised in Minto. Nathan's heart and soul was on the Minto Flats. He loved to hunt, fish and gather on the Flats for family and village members. Nathan learned the traditional way of subsistence hunting from his late father Larry and late grandfather Ceros. Nathan loved to cook for his brothers; even as adults, Nathan worked to see that no one was hungry. Nathan was quiet but giving. Much of his catch was shared with others. Nathan could always be counted on to butcher moose, cook and clean the campfire for the annual FNA potlatch.
Nathan was a talented artist, some of his work being used for T-shirts for community events. Nathan's artwork reflected the love for his culture.
In 1996, the Minto Lakers were battling Unalakeet for regionals. With seconds left, Nathan launched the ball at half court for a buzzer beater. Minto won by 1 and went on to state.
As an adult, Nathan worked as a squad boss as a wildland firefighter, always ready for a challenge.
Nathan is proceeded in death by his late parents, Larry "Flutch" and Joyce Charlie; sibling, Lydia Faye Charlie; Uncle Gabe McQuestion; Uncles Delnor, Randy, Bobby, Levi and Gespher Charlie; and his grandparents, Cerosky and Linda Charlie and Florence McQuestion and Floyd Demientieff. Nathan is survived by his daughter, Nevaeh Titus, his pride and joy; siblings, Kristina (Ethan) Schutt, Bianca (Robert), Sam (Keri), Lafon, Travis, Zachary and Benjamin; his partner, Shonda Brushl nephews Delnor, Trevor, Elias and Keziah; nieces Summer, Erin and Sonrissa; many uncles, aunts, cousins and friends; and his close friends/relatives, Jeff Simmonds, Charla Alexander, Bessie Charlie and Cameron Winfrey.
Visitation will be at noon Wednesday, July 14, 2021, at the Minto Community Hall. The funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. with the burial and funeral potlatch to follow.
