In the early hours of Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, Paul Itchoak Hugo departed God's green Earth to join the Lord, our Savior and meet his beloved brothers Peter and Richard, his best friend Lloyd Paul and many, many family members who were expecting him at the Golden Gates.
Paul was born into a Nunamiut community, transitioning from caribou-followers to settling in a permanent settlement in order to receive Bureau of Indian Affairs assistance, regular schooling and weekly Presbyterian church services.
Paul was born in Anaktuvuk Pass to Zaccharias and Doris Hugo on July 17, 1960. Itchaok grew up traveling the lands around Anaktuvuk Pass with his brothers Roy, Peter, Richard and his three sisters Mugsy, Martha and Marlene. He was raised as a hunter and caribou follower.
Paul found the love of his life, Dorcas Aqi Hugo. From that first day, the two were conjoined at the hip. Paul and Dorcas gave birth to six daughters and adopted three sons in the traditional Nunamiut style. Paul loved watching and raising his children in Anaktuvuk Pass and taught them all to enjoy their surroundings and appreciate what the land has given them.
Paul was an avid, un-trained mechanic, an overly hyper basketball fan, a checkers junkie, a jokester, a father to all of his children's friends and relatives, and an amazing and just spokesman to his community of Anaktuvuk Pass.
Paul is survived by his wife, Dorcas; children, Freida, Frances, Darlene, Miriam, Darryl, Amanilla, Mary, Lloyd and Jaden; grandchildren, Alexia, Pernell, Peter, Omar and Jaden; his parents, Zaccharias and Doris Hugo; in-laws, Thomas and Ruth Rulland; brother, Roy Hugo; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mugsy and Bass Gordon, Martha and Alan Spear and Marlene Hugo; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends within the North Slope and Alaska.
A funeral service and atugaaq will be held in Anaktuvuk Pass at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Nunamiut School. Any and all people will be welcome in remembering his wonderful life.
The family would like to thank everyone for their support and comfort. Thank you to Super 8 Motel, Fairbanks Police Department, Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, Alaska/King Cab, Eagle/Yellow Cab, Velma and Ray Horner, Ed Peebles, Downtown Bingo, Warbelow's Air Ventures personnel and family, Frontier Flying service personnel and family, Arctic Slope Native Association, Doyon Corp., Arctic Slope Regional Corp. and Fairbanks Funeral Home.
