Robert Growden
1923 - 2010
Former Delta Junction resident Robert Growden, 87, died Dec. 15, 2010, in Port Townsend, Wash. Bob had lived at his daughter's home there for the past
2 1/2 months.
Bob went peacefully surrounded by his children and oldest grandchild. He was given tender, kind and respectful care by the compassionate staff at Jefferson Healthcare in Port Townsend.
Bob was born June 18, 1923, in Ruby to Gwendolyn Fisher and William Growden.
He was a long haul truck driving pioneer, respected by his fellow drivers and friends. Breaking up the icy roads in the early years, he drove thousands of miles during his 30-year career and had a story for every trip.
He will be missed by the Delta Junction community and his family and friends. He lived in Delta Junction for 44 years.
His family said, "Dad had a twinkle in his eye, catching the attention of many. Young and old, big and small alike saw the kind and trusting energy that blessed him all his life. The Delta community will feel his absence as they pass by his little house and beautiful land. His children vow to be good stewards of his legacy. God bless our Dad."
His cremains will be scattered on his Delta property and in Valdez Harbor, where the ashes of his father, two brothers and two nephews were scattered. This will take place in May 2011.
He was preceded in death by his parents; former wife, Nancy Parker; wife, Olive McElroy; son, Robert Growden Jr.; and brothers,William and James Growden.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Kim and Mike Hammers of Port Townsend, Richard and Diane Growden of Renton, Wash., and Jeffrey and Cristina Growden of Graham, Wash.; grandchildren: Jessica DeLorenzo (Larry), Robert Hammers (Laura), Christopher Growden, Scott Growden, Katy Growden, Camryn Growden, Robin Growden, Linnea Growden and Laila Brinks; great-grandchildren, Ava and Elise Hammers; brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Eddy Growden of Delta Junction; and nieces and nephews, Bill, Bonnie, Becky, Alan, Kelly and Amy.
