Longtime Anchorage resident Robert Curtis Nauheim, 53, died at home surrounded by his loving family on July 10, 2009, after his valiant three and a half year fight against pancreatic cancer.
Rob was born July 16, 1955, in San Francisco, to Robert and Anne Nauheim. He grew up in Sonoma, Calif., and attended college in California and Provo, Utah before moving north to finish his undergraduate degree at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
In 1989, Rob graduated from the University of Oregon Law School where he was a member of the Law Review. He was admitted to the Alaska Bar Association that same year and briefly worked in private practice before spending his career representing the Alaska Department of Natural Resources as an assistant attorney general.
In 2002, Rob married the love of his life, Beth McKay, and together with his beautiful sons, Isan and Keelan, welcomed their beloved daughter Julia into the world.
Rob was a devoted husband and father. He had a deep passion for history, nature and sports, including running and football. He was an exceptional cook and a gifted guitarist and music producer. His bright mind and loving spirit will be dearly missed.
Rob is survived by his wife, Beth McKay; children, Isan and Keelan Nauheim (sons of Marilyn Pillifant); daughter, Julia McKay Nauheim; his mother, Anne Harris of Bozeman, Mont.; his siblings, Penny Sbicca of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Victoria Golding of Bozeman, Mont., and Mark Nauheim of Fairbanks. He dearly enjoyed his sisters- and brothers-in-law and numerous nephews and nieces, who greatly loved and admired him.
Rob was preceded in death by his father, Bob Nauheim; his loving grandmothers, Lois Wilson and Dora Blunden and his grandfather, Milton Nauheim.
Rob's ashes will be scattered at his family's special spot near Anchorage and "the creek" on Cavedale Road in Sonoma, Calif., his favorite childhood location.
A celebration of Rob's life will be held on his 54th birthday, Thursday, July 16, at 7 p.m., at Hilltop Ski Chalet. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society or the Hirshberg Pancreatic Research Center.
The family expresses deep appreciation to Amedisys Hospice Services and Providence's Susan Butcher Family Center.

The creek... Butch and me went up and down that thing... He fell off that bridge once, abd cracked his head open. I think it was Noel thst placed a stick in his mouth so he wouldn't swallow his tongue. He was my best friend in the 4th and 5th grade.

Butch was my best friend in the the 4th and 5th grade. We went to Dunbar Elementary. We hiked all over the hills. We found an indian grave up near a grove of Redwood Trees on the Joel McCrea Ranch in 1965. Last time I saw him was in 1970. They were still living at the Cavedale house. They had a swimming pool. We hiked that creek, and Sonoma Creek too. Fished there. Swam at the Clay banks. Rode our bikes to Boys Hot Springs Pool. I am sorry to hear of his passing. He was a good friend.

Butch (Rob) was my dear friend in HS. We played guitar together and he made me a better musician. Football was a joy for both of us and he was a born leader of our team. I have never met a man like him. He was a man of action and always was there to help when needed. I loved him like a brother.

Please accept our deepest sympathy in the passing of Rob. As a friend of Mark and Annette, I met Rob a couple of times and was greatly impressed by his character. It is truly sad to lose so one so gifted so early.

Dear Beth and wonderful loving family,
You have been in my thoughts so much this past week.
Thank you for allowing me to assist in Rob's care and to have a chance to get to know your lovely family.
The memorial service let me glimpse Rob before he was sick. I so wish I had a chance to know him then. Thank you for inviting me.
It was a real privilege to see and feel the love that surrounded Rob in his life and in his death. I truly wish all my patients were so loved.
Blessings to all of you.

Hi Beth,
I have been thinking so much about you and your family over these past few days. I don't know if memories can even begin to help relieve you from the heartache you are experiencing, but I must share mine with you. I am remembering the first time I met Rob at a parent teacher conference. He was "father extraordinaire" to Isan who was then a member of our 8th Grade Neon Team. Months later, Jeff and I were on a bike ride and we ran into you and Rob. I had no idea at the time that the two of you, from two different parts of my life, had found one another. The joy on your face and that moment in time will be with me forever. You found your soulmate and no matter what star Rob is reaching for right now, you will always be connected. My deepest sympathy...
