Mother, daughter, sister, wife, grandma, great-grandma, great-great grandma, matriarch and friend, Vera Nita Carter Strack slipped the bonds of Earth on May 10, 2021, and left to join her ancestors and loved ones. She is at peace, even as we all recognize the hole she leaves in the hearts of those that loved her. Vera, we know, was not only dear to family, but also to so very many others who she came across in life.
Vera was born on July 6, 1924, in Fort Yukon, Alaska. She was the third of 12 children born to Harry and Stephanita (Nita) Carter. Growing up one of 12 children on the Yukon River, her life was full of adventures. Vera loved being out on the river and in the wilderness. She enjoyed skiing and dog mushing in the winter, harvesting mushrooms, berries and plants in the summer and fall. She especially loved picking berries and could spend the entire day in the berry patch, providing berries not only for the family but for so many others. A master gardener, she was known for her flower beds and abundance of vegetables.
It was not uncommon for her to drop what she was doing to help family and friends. She led by example when it came to loving unconditionally, yet, she always told us the truth as she felt it and saw it. She left a legacy of love and adventures with her family.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William E. Strack; and grandson, Todd Hughes. She left behind siblings Billie Frances Opland (since passed), Kathleen (Kitty) Quintard, Alberta (Bobbie) Rich, Michael Carter (Mary); daughters, Pamela Larsen (Steve), Pauline Loudon (Stanley), Sandra Creamer (Donald), Roxanna Wright (David Freedle), Lynette Holt (David), Donna Cole (Craig), Yvonne Mueller (David); grandchildren, Colin Larsen (Celeste), Greg Loudon (Jenny), Matthew Loudon (Brooke), Jaime Benoit (Jed), Leif Abel, Gloria Lannen, Tim O'Connor (Kendra), Ramy Brooks (Cathy), Tammy Holland (Doug), Jay Hughes (Tammy), Collette Howard (Wade), Nick Holt (Jenni), Cindi Blackman (Andrew Hounsell), William Blackman, Vera Cole, Willow Cole, Amanda Steward, Robin Adams (Austin), Sam Mueller and Sarah Ivy (Curtis); and 39 great-grandchildren, and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
The family invites you to join them for a celebration of Vera's life at noon July 31 at the Manley Hot Springs Roadhouse.

My condolences to the family of Vera Strack. She was a lovely person, although I didn't know her well my mom, Effie Kokrine, had great affection for Vera. When my mother was still working for Hiroko's Tailor Shop on Second Avenue downtown Vera helped her tremendously. Vera knew how much my mother hated living out on the Richardson Highway without reliable transportation to work every day. Vera suggested that my mother buy her little house in Graehl. As much as Effie would have liked to buy the house, she didn't have the ability. Vera was very insistent and gave Effie a very good deal. With the help of Hiroko's husband Effie was able to purchase the house that she spent the rest of her life in. She loved that little house, continually fixing it up and making the yard beautiful. She planted flowers and shrubs and had a picnic table in the yard for family and guests. She painted the house turquoise with white trim. She eventually added a smoke house and would smoke fish right in her yard. Once the neighbors even called the fire department because they were concerned about the smoke. Thought that you would enjoy knowing what a blessing Vera was to our mother.

Always enjoyed visiting with Vera at the Pioneer Home. I see her in my mind's eye sitting at a puzzle or scooting around backwards on her walker. Condolences to you Yvonne and the rest of the family.
