Norma Louise Honl, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, went peacefully to be with her Lord on Monday, April 14, 2025 at St. Catherine's SMP in Fargo, ND. She was 95.
Norma was born on July 4, 1929, to Anton and Esther (Allain) Gaukler in her grandmother Allain's house in Lidgerwood. She spent much of her life in Lidgerwood, surrounded by family, friends, and the community she cherished.
Norma attended St. Boniface Elementary and graduated from Lidgerwood High School. She worked at several local businesses including Coast-to-Coast, Lidgerwood Drug, and Popp's Hardware. Alongside these roles, she embraced the life of a farmer, gardener, and homemaker with dedication and pride.
She married Andrew Honl on January 12, 1949, with whom she shared 36 years of marriage before his passing. Together they had three children, Stef, Greg, and Cindy. Norma found great joy in cooking hearty meals for loved ones, tending to her garden, and welcoming guests to her home. Her home was often the center of lively gatherings filled with family and friends. Norma lived on the Honl family farm until 1993 when she moved to Lidgerwood.
Norma's joy for life extended well beyond her home. She was an active member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Lidgerwood and participated faithfully in the Christian Mothers and Altar Society. Her commitment to service also included involvement on the Lidgerwood Museum committee, Senior Citizens, American Legion Auxiliary, Red Hatters society, and Lidgerwood Homemakers-organizations through which she formed lasting friendships and contributed meaningfully to her community.
Her hobbies reflected her vibrant spirit: she enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, bowling leagues, golfing outings, arts and crafts projects, solving puzzles, traveling with family and friends and decorating for each holiday, especially Christmas. These activities brought her great joy throughout her long life.
Norma is survived by her children, Stef Honl (Claudia), Grand Forks, Greg Honl (Evelyn), Sioux Falls, and Cindy Buttke, Fargo; six grandchildren, Heather (Gene) Eckstein, Jason Buttke, Tami (Ted) Knudson, Carrie (Jeremy) Pederson, Merrilee (Brandon) Schultz, and Alison Buttke; twelve great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Ann Haas; brothers and sisters-in-law, LaVerne Honl, Barbara and Roger Buske, Jean Honl, Connie Hansen, Larry and Penny Honl; and many nieces and nephews.
Norma is reunited with her beloved husband, Andrew; her parents; sisters, brothers, sisters-in-law and brothers-in law, Helen and Robert Hankey, Betty and William Kashe, Robert and Leona Gaukler, John and Margaret Gaukler, Paul Haas, Junette and Donald Willprecht, Donald and Magdalen Honl, Harold and Janice Honl, ElRoy Honl, Gene Honl, Betty Honl, Glenda Honl, and David Hansen.
Visitation will be Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Lidgerwood, ND from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. followed by a Rosary at 10:30 a.m., and funeral mass at 11 a.m. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Lidgerwood.
