Robert "Bob" Fust
June 5, 1936 - September 20, 2025
Robert "Bob" William Fust passed away peacefully on September 20, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born on June 5, 1936, in Geneseo, ND, to Jacob and Minnie Fust, where he was raised alongside four sisters and two brothers, all of whom contributed to the daily operations of their family farm.
At eighteen, Bob enlisted in the United States Army, serving for three years, including one year in Korea post-conflict as Military Police. During his Christmas leave in 1958, he married Shirley Baker at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Geneseo. Together, they had one son, Brian, who died shortly after birth, and three daughters: Dawn (Brian) Anderson, Lori (Roy) Plankers and Jodi (Phil) Birnbaum. They were blessed with 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Grandchildren - Desiree (Joe) Possehl, Brandi (Doug) Hermann, Marshall (Alicia) Anderson, Dylan Anderson, Brad (KaeLyn) Plankers, Jack (Courtney) Plankers, Chuck Plankers, and Evan, Isaac and Jacob Birnbaum. Great-grandchildren - Colton, Addison and Morgan Possehl; Hunter and Henry Hermann; Harper, Scarlett and Vivian Plankers; and Levi Plankers.
Bob greatly valued time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sharing activities such as woodworking, home repairs, fishing, hunting, and attending their sporting events. He frequently enjoyed the company of his great grandchildren, engaging with them whenever they came by. After church on Sundays, he loved to make breakfast for any family members able to join.
Bob and Shirley made their forever home in Lidgerwood, ND where he was very active in developing the community. He was mayor of Lidgerwood for a total of 28 years, as well as a member of the city council, he was active with the Ambulance Board, Fireman's Board, Richland County Job Development Board, Knights of Columbus, church board and volunteered for many other opportunities that came up around the area. He was always available to help a neighbor when needed.
Bob also ran his construction company which provided many, many people with beautiful homes around the area. He was extremely detailed at construction work and woodworking and was approached by many people with a picture of something in their hand that usually involved the question "Bob, could you possibly make this for me?" I don't believe there was ever a time he said no and completed these projects with a beautiful end product for people to cherish for many years. After retiring from building homes, Bob decided to run the Lidgerwood Lumber Yard. He thoroughly enjoyed continuing to help the local contractors and provide his experience and knowledge to all of his customers.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Minnie, his son Brian, his sister Joyce (Ernie) Matuska, his sister Rosella Medhaug, and his son-in-law Brian Anderson.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Shirley, their 3 daughters, 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, his brothers Bill (Carole) and Arlan (Deb), and his sisters Mavis Thornberg and Velma Fust, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly and is also survived by many special friends.
The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to CHI Hospice, especially Mariah for taking great care of Bob during his last few months, Kathy Marohl for being an amazing caretaker and friend to the family during the most difficult days, and to Jerry and Yvonne Nelson for assisting in so many ways over the past several months. We are forever grateful for your time spent caring for Bob and the rest of the family at this time.
