Albert Jenkins Obituary

Dr. Albert Milton Jenkins

April 14, 1924 - August 21, 2018

Raleigh

Dr. Albert Milton Jenkins, M.D., devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and prominent area Radiologist, passed away peacefully at age 94 on the evening of August 21st, at his home surrounded by family. Known to his friends and acquaintances as Al, he was lovingly referred to as 'Grampa Al' by his grandsons.

Born in Charleston, West Virginia on April 14th, 1924, he was the son of the late Albert Milton Jenkins, Architect and Engineer, and the late Margaret Mitchell McPeak, beloved lifelong Elementary School Teacher.

Growing up in suburban Cincinnati, he attended high school in Norwood, Ohio. He continued his education at the University of Cincinnati, graduating with the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1947. He interned at the University of Cincinnati General Hospital, later achieving a Fellowship in Radiology with the distinguished practice of Groover, Chrisitie, and Merritt in Washington, D.C. He attained certification by the American Board of Radiology and became a Fellow of the American College of Radiology.

He established his own medical practice in Raleigh, with the first Wake Radiology office located in Cameron Village circa 1953. In addition to his work with Rex Hospital, he also served as Chief of Radiology at Wake Medical Center. His creation of Wake Radiology Consultants grew to a preeminent presence in the area's Medical Diagnostic Imaging capabilities.

He combined his love of Diagnostic Imaging and Japanese culture by serving as Visiting Scientist at Kyoto Prefectural Hospital, MRI Department. He was active at the University of Nagoya, UNC Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State University in Medical Imaging, Japanese language study, and cultural outreach.

Al is remembered for his love of Medicine, Music, and Mathematics, as well as his accomplished service in the United States Navy following Pearl Harbor. He was an avid supporter of the North Carolina Symphony, with a key role in establishing the Swalin Conductor's Chair and lobby. He greatly enjoyed playing music with his friends, and was an accomplished classical pianist. A keen chess player, he was active in the North Carolina Chess Association with several State Championships to his credit.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Susan Sheipline Jenkins, his daughter Virginia Mitchell Jenkins, his son-in-law Insoo Joh, his son William Meredith Jenkins, his daughter-in-law Carla Herrin Jenkins, and his grandsons Nathan and Eli Jenkins.

A celebration of Al's life will be held in the Springmoor South Village Terrace Room on Saturday August 25th, 2 to 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests these organizations: NCSU Wolfpack Club Scholarship Endowment, Poe Center for Health Education, the North Carolina Symphony, and Transitions LifeCare Hospice Services. My condolences to the family--Mrs. Jenkins, "Ginny" and "Butch", as I knew them when babysitting back in my high school days. I will always remember Dr. Jenkins as a man of intellect, integrity and kindness. I gained a greater appreciation of classical music from hearing it in his home. My very best wishes for the whole family as you go forward. Sincerely, Mary Helen Harris Johnson, Centreville, VA.
