Albert Ness Obituary

Albert Kenneth Ness, 98, Professor Emeritus of Art, UNC at Chapel Hill, N.C., died June 29, 2001. professor Ness was born in St. Ignace, Michigan, June 21, 1903.
He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Lenore Chrisman Ness; and their children, Peter Ness, James Kenneth Ness, and Jane Lenore McKiever.
A 1932 graduate of the Chicago Art Institute, Professor Ness began his teaching career in 1938 as instructor, then Art Director at the School of Applied Art, Chicago, 1938-40.
He joined the University of North Carolina faculty as Carnegie Resident Artist, 1941-43. He was Director, War Art Center, 1942-43; Resident Artist and Associate Professor of Art, 1943-49; Acting Head, Department of Art and ActingDirector, Person Hall Art Gallery, 1944-45; Resident Artist and Professor of Art, 1949-73' and was designated Professor Emeritus in 1973.
One man shows include Chester Johnson Galleries, Chicago, 1932; Evanston Art Center, Illinois, 1940; Person Hall Art Gallery, Chapel Hill, N.C., 1941; N.C. Art Society Gallery, Raleigh, N.C., 1942; Duke University Art Gallery, Durham, N.C., 1955; Louisburg College Gallery, Louisburg, N.C. 1964; Ackland Art Museum, UNC, Chapel Hill, N.C., 1973.
Professor Ness received the North Carolina Award in Fine Arts in 1973 from Governor Holshouser, culminating his career of teaching service to the university and it's art students.
Services will be private.
