To the family of Dr. Verhey:
I did not know Allen Verhey, except through his book that I am reading now, The Great Reversal. I asked for it at my library because of its title, not knowing what a scholar Dr. Verhey was. Nor did I know that he had died. Today reading one third of the way through the book, I wanted to know more about this author. I googled him and now have arrived at this website.
I want you, his family, to know how Allen Verhey lives on in his life work. I am deeply impressed by his scholarship, his vocabulary, his organized thoughts, and his principled faith. Though much of his book is over my head, I follow his logic and am inspired.
I am a second-career pastor in The United Methodist Church. My dad was a professor too, at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley. My grandfather taught at Boston University School of Theology. Ethics has been a topic at our kitchen table always.
I offer my genuine condolences and tribute. I wish I could have studied with this man.

Dr. Verhey was a great teacher. It was my honor to take several religion classes from him while he served at Hope College. I read and appreciated many of his books. My favorite was his commentary on the catechism.
