Almeda Hood Obituary

Almeda Charlton Hood died peacefully on February 21, 2001 at Mayview Convalescent Center, Raleigh, NC.
Born on August 11, 1913, Almeda was the daughter of Eldred Dorris and Frances Smith Charlton. Before coming to Raleigh to reside at Mayview, she had been a lifelong resident of Tennessee, living most of her life in Nashville. She graduated from Hume Fogg High School, Ward-Belmont Junior College, and Vanderbilt University, with a degree in mathematics. After hermarriage to John Hood in 1937, she moved to Jefferson City, Tennessee, where she served as Dean of Women at Carson Newman College while her husband taught naval history during World War II. After the war, Almeda and John returned to Nashville and began to raise a family. He accepted the position of Director of Watkins Institute, an adult education school, at that time. Almeda spent many happy years being involved with her family, her community, and her church. She was very active in many areas ofministry at First Baptist Church. She was also active in the local PTA and Girl Scouts. One of her favorite activities was the Book Club, a discussion group that she enjoyed for over 40 years. After her husband's death in 1967, Almeda embarked on a new career at the Baptist Book Store. She was eventually made assistant manager of the Nashville store. She enthusiastically worked at this position until her retirement in 1979.
She is survived by her daughter, Janelle Hood Haseman, of Raleigh, North Carolina, her son-in-law Joe Haseman, her grandchildren, David and Ashley Haseman, and a great-grandson. She is also survived by a sister, Mary Frances Turney, of Nashville, Tennessee, a brother, Tom Smith Charlton, of Knoxville, Tennessee, as wellas a host of nieces and nephews.
Almeda will best be remembered for her love of life, her thoughtfulness, and her unselfishness toward her family and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff of Mayview for all the love and care that they gave to Almeda.
A graveside service will be conducted Monday, February 26, 2001, in Nashville, Tennessee.
The family will receive friends Sunday, February 25, 2001, from 3-6 p.m. at Roesch-Patton-Austin-Bracey-Charlton Funeral Home, 1715 Broadway, Nashville, Tennessee.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Winnie Powell Scholarship Fund, First Baptist Church, 7th and Broad, Nashville, Tennessee, 37203, or to Asbury United Methodist Church, 6612 Creedmoor Rd., Raleigh, North Carolina, 27613.
