Amy Rowland Obituary

Amy Caroline Rowland

July 26, 1975 - April 6, 2020

Raleigh

Amy Caroline Rowland passed away to be with God on April 06, 2020. Her loving husband and mother were with her. Amy was born to Mary Ann (Fries) and Richard C. Welton, in Tacoma, Washington. Amy graduated from Homer L. Ferguson High School in Newport News, VA in 1993, where she was a steadfast member of the Debate Team and The National Honor Society. She graduated from Virginia Tech in World Politics in 1997. Amy was an avid artist and loving mother to three girls. She loved to cook, bake, garden, and collect antiques. She was a loving sister to Elizabeth Holton, Mary Mullins, and Ricky Welton. She was the loving daughter-in-law of Bonnie and Rick Rowland, and sister-in-law to Karen Rowland Earley. She leaves behind her husband Brian, and their three daughters Emma, Lily, and Celia. A celebration of her life will be held at a future date, and memorial contributions can be made to the family using the following link: Rowland Family Support Fund.

I did not know Amy, but I came across an engraved river stone dedicated to her memory while visiting the natural cemetery at Holy Abbey Monastery in Virginia. I took a photo of it to share with my husband, as I have decided to be interred there when my time comes. I thought her loved ones might want to see it.

Amy was like the older sister to my children. We shared some wonderful memories over the years, especially when we lived in VA. I first met Mary Ann when Mary and my youngest son, Xavier were in Montessori preschool together. As our friendship grew and our families socialized, Amy was always the older and wiser member of the gang of 6 children who often played/hung out together. Wonderfully curious and a francophile "au coeur", Amy asked to take some French lessons from me for a time, which we did, at my dining room table. Some lazy summer afternoons were spent learning French verbs- regular and irregular. When together with the rest of the family, I remember making crepes with my French husband who was more than happy to show the enfants the correct way of making that dish. Wonderfully mature, sweet, intelligent, yet a little mysterious with that dark movie-star beauty, Amy will be missed by all those who were graced by her presence. Sincere sympathy from my family to all those whose lives she touched so profoundly. Big hugs, Janet

Mike and I are so deeply saddened over the loss of dear Amy. I was both honored and blessed to be her godmother and have many special memories of her as the bright, sweet, loving and wonderful person she always was. The Christmas pictures of her beautiful family say everything. We will always hold her deeply in our hearts and send our thoughts and prayers to all of her loving family.

My first memory of Amy is the cute, smart, little girl I met in Silver Spring when she was about four or five. There are lots of other good memories from visits with Amy and her family in Newport News and in Arlington, when Mary Anne and the three girls would all cram into my small condo.

But the memory I will cherish most is of Amy as a beautiful young mother and wife who would always remember her mothers old friend at Christmas.

Every year I received a Christmas card from Amy with a picture of her family, most often just the girls. Amy wasnt doing this out of obligation I rarely send cards and when I do it is usually in January. I sent notes to Amy sometimes but I am sure there were lots of years I didnt acknowledge her cards. But Amy was always faithful. And I looked forward to those cards. Amys girls are beautiful and each year I was surprised at how much they looked like Amy and her sisters at comparable ages. The cards always brought back such nice memories of Amy and her sisters.

I wish now I had picked up the phone and called Amy to tell her how much those cards meant to me, to tell her I wished I could meet her family some day, to ask her about her life and to tell her how lucky I felt to have known her and her siblings as they were growing up.

Thank- you, Amy.

Amy was a happy, loving child. At the age of two years, "We told her she had big, beautful brown eyes!' She said, "No. My eyes are black!" We laughed hysterically! We have many wonderful memories of Amy! She grew into a lovely , beautiful woman! Her beauty shined brightly inside and out! We will miss her dearly. She was our niece! We were blessed to have her in our lives!

I met Amy as a young girl during our wonderful yoga sessions at the familys home in Newport News & watched her progress through school, career, marriage & motherhood. Every year we received lively Christmas card with the girls picture. I am so sorry to learn that she is no longer with us. Our world is a better place for her having lived here. My sincerely sympathies to her living family.

Mary Ann- an unspeakable grief and there are no words. You have a small army of friends and colleagues who want to help you, provide meals, or just be with you, as soon as you return. Prayers continue. Love, Denise
